Fast Food in Torquay

Where the big chains are, and how far to the ones that aren't here

The chains

Sometimes the kids want nuggets, and that's fine. Torquay has most of the big fast food names, and nearly all of them are in one stretch of the Surf Coast Highway on the way into town, a few minutes' drive from north Torquay. McDonald's, KFC and Zambrero are close together on the highway, and Subway is around the corner by Surf City Plaza.

A few chains aren't in Torquay at all. There's no Hungry Jack's, Red Rooster, Guzman y Gomez or Grill'd in town; the nearest are at Armstrong Creek, about 15 minutes towards Geelong, and Waurn Ponds, about 20 minutes. Store hours change through the year, so check the chain's app or website before you go.

In Torquay

McDonald's

At 63-69 Surf Coast Highway, on the main road into Torquay from Geelong. It's on Uber Eats for delivery.

KFC

On the Surf Coast Highway a little further north, next door to Zambrero. Also on Uber Eats.

Zambrero

The burrito and bowl chain, at 89 Surf Coast Highway, open from 10.30am every day, until 9pm from Sunday to Wednesday and 9.30pm from Thursday to Saturday. It's the lighter fast food option: burritos, bowls, nachos and tacos, with plenty of vegetarian choices. Order on its own app or Uber Eats.

Subway

At 3/118 Surf Coast Highway, near Surf City Plaza and the surf shops, so it's handy for a quick lunch between the outlets.

Betty's Burgers

The Noosa burger chain, in the Torquay Village shopping centre at 41 Bristol Road. It's a step up from the drive-throughs, with burgers made to order and thick frozen-custard Concretes. Open from 11am every day, until 9pm, or 10pm on Friday and Saturday. More in our burgers guide.

Domino's and Bubba Pizza

Domino's is at Shop 2, 108-110 Surf Coast Highway, open until 10pm, and Bubba Pizza is at 38-40 Bell Street. Both deliver. For the local pizza shops and the wood-fired places, see our pizza guide. For a roast chicken dinner instead, Pollo on Bristol Road does free-range rotisserie chickens and salads.

Not in Torquay: the nearest

Armstrong Creek, about 15 minutes

The Armstrong Creek Town Centre on Torquay Road, on the way to Geelong, has the closest Hungry Jack's (458-498 Torquay Road). Its drive-through opens at 6am and runs until 11pm, or midnight on Friday and Saturday. There's a Red Rooster, another KFC, a McDonald's, El Jannah charcoal chicken and Schnitz in the same strip. If you're driving down from Melbourne via Geelong, it's an easy stop on the way in.

Waurn Ponds, about 20 minutes

Around the Waurn Ponds shopping centre on Colac Road in Grovedale there's another Hungry Jack's, plus Grill'd, Guzman y Gomez, Red Rooster, KFC, McDonald's and Donut King. The Hungry Jack's drive-through there stays open until 1am on Friday and 2am on Saturday.

Late at night and on the road

Torquay goes quiet early, and most of the local takeaways and restaurants have stopped cooking by 9pm. For a late feed, try the highway chains (check the app for that night's hours), and the supermarkets are open until 10pm (see our supermarkets guide). There's a 7-Eleven in town for a late snack too.

If you're arriving late from Melbourne, it's often easier to eat on the way. Armstrong Creek is right on the route from Geelong, about 15 minutes short of Torquay, and the Hungry Jack's drive-through there is open until 11pm most nights.

Local alternatives

For not much more money, the local takeaways are a lot more Torquay. A pack of fish and chips on the foreshore is the classic, and the fish and chip shops all do burgers and nuggets for the kids. Bells Bakery does a pie for under $7, and Taj Express does a curry and rice for $13.40 (see our Indian restaurants guide). The Thai restaurants all do takeaway as well.

At lunchtime there are a few quick, cheap feeds that beat a drive-through. HugSiam's Thai lunch-box sets, with rice and a spring roll, are $15.50 from Friday to Sunday. Mortadeli on Gilbert Street makes Maltese and Italian rolls from 11am, and the Salty Dog on Fishermans Beach does a double cheeseburger with fries for $18, with the beach thrown in.

Feeding the kids

If it's the kids who are asking, there are kids' meals all over town that aren't from a drive-through. Betty's has a nippers' menu, Gypsy Burger at Bells Beach Brewing does a kids' cheeseburger for $13, the Salty Dog's kids' meals are $12.50 (nuggets and chips included), and 4 Pines at Surf City Plaza has a "Groms" menu of nuggets, a cheeseburger or a mini parma with fries. Most of the fish and chip shops do nuggets or kids' meals too.
