Not your average chicken shop
Pollo is at 15 Bristol Road, in the town centre a short walk from Gilbert Street, and about five minutes' drive from north Torquay. It's a takeaway chicken shop, but a cut above: the chooks are free range and slow-roasted on a French rotisserie, the chips are cut by hand, and the salads are made fresh every day.
The first Pollo opened on Pakington Street in Geelong West, and there's a stand at GMHBA Stadium on footy days. Jason Gugliotti, who runs it, is also behind Ela, the Greek restaurant on The Esplanade.
What to order
Rotisserie chicken
The reason to come. Get a whole or half chook, with chips and a couple of salads, and dinner for the house is sorted. Reviewers rate the newer garlic chicken too.
The salad bar
A run of seasonal salads made fresh each day, and the thing people mention most in reviews. Even vegetarians say it's worth the trip to a chicken shop.
Tenders, sandos and wraps
Buttermilk chicken tenders with Pollo's own sauces, and a list of sandos and wraps for lunch, including a toasted chicken katsu sando.
Hot sides and dessert
Roast vegetables and other hot sides, and Biscoff cheesecake or chocolate mousse to finish.
Family meals
Value packs of chicken, chips, sides and sauces, built for feeding a group without fuss. Handy on a night when nobody wants to cook.
Gluten free
Pollo says the rotisserie chicken, chips, vegetables and most of the salad bar are naturally gluten free, and they're clearly labelled. That makes it one of the easiest takeaways in town for a coeliac in the group.
Hours and ordering
Opening hours
The Pollo website lists the Torquay shop as open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 7.45pm. It's closed on Mondays. It closes early for a dinner place, so order before 7.30pm.
Ordering
Order online or through the Pollo app, or ring (03) 5249 0595. There's outdoor seating if you'd rather eat there, and dogs are welcome outside.
Catering
Pollo caters for 10 to more than 200 people, with platters and family-style packs. For a big group staying for a birthday or a wedding, it's worth a call.
How it started
Pollo began as Pollo Rotisserie on Pakington Street in Geelong West, in the old Pako Meats shop. When it opened, Forte Magazine reported that the team had spent a year researching poultry farms to find the best-tasting chooks, and settled on free-range and organic Tasmanian birds, marinated for 24 hours before they go on the rotisserie. You can get a quarter, a half or a whole chicken.
The Geelong West shop launched with a hot food bar of the kind of sides you'd want with a Sunday roast: truffle mac and cheese, cauliflower cheese, scalloped potatoes, honey-glazed carrots and roast pumpkin. The salad bar had ancient grains, pumpkin and pear couscous and an apple slaw. What's on in Torquay changes with the season, but it's the same idea.
A night in at the house
Pollo is one of the best answers to the question of what to do about dinner after a big beach day. A whole chook, a tub of chips, roast vegetables and two or three salads will feed a family, and it travels well: it's about five minutes back to north Torquay, so it's still hot when you get home. Pick up a loaf from a bakery earlier in the day and you've got sandwiches for the next day's lunch sorted too.
Remember it closes before 8pm and isn't open on Mondays. On a Monday night, try the pizza shops or the fast food chains on the Surf Coast Highway instead.
What people say
On Google, Pollo Torquay rates 4.8 from more than 270 reviews, one of the best scores of any takeaway in town. Reviewers mention the salads more than anything else, then the roast chicken, the focaccia and the cheesecake. Several mention big serves, friendly staff and quick service. The chicken katsu sando is popular enough that it sometimes sells out, so go early if you've got your heart set on it.
