Pies, bread and a vanilla slice

Torquay has a good spread of bakeries for a town its size. Most of them are in the town centre, on Bell Street, Gilbert Street and in the Torquay Village shopping centre on Bristol Road, all within a few minutes' walk of each other and about five minutes' drive from north Torquay. The organic sourdough bakery is out in the industrial estate, and it opens its doors once a week.

They split roughly into two kinds. There are the pie-and-coffee bakeries, for a quick feed on the way to the beach, and the bread bakeries, for a loaf to take back to the house. Hours below are from each bakery's own website or listing in October 2026.

The bakeries

Bells Bakery

The local pie shop, on Bell Street since 1999 and open every day from 7am to 3pm. It's known for its game pies: a Thai green curry camel pie, buffalo and ale, and venison and red wine ($8.40 each), plus an emu sausage roll. The everyday steak pies start at $6.40, there's a cabinet of old-school slices and custard tarts, vegan pies and sausage rolls, and Honeybird coffee. Tables inside and out.

Zeally Bay Sourdough

Torquay's organic sourdough bakery, baking since 2007 and supplying a lot of the town's cafes. It's a wholesale bakery on Sawmills Way, but the bakery door opens to the public every Saturday from 9am to 11.30am, and you can pre-order online by Thursday at 1pm. Most loaves are $11 to $12, with two gluten-friendly loaves and a Genovese focaccia. Through the week, Dusty's Bulk Foods, Peach's Torquay and Surfcoast Wholefoods stock it.

Charlie Bakery

One of the newer bakeries in town, in the Torquay Village shopping centre at 41-57 Bristol Road, the centre with the Coles. It bakes its own sourdough (the everyday loaf is 10% rye) and does sweet and savoury pastries, focaccias, pies, sausage rolls and ciabatta rolls, with a breakfast menu and seats to eat in. It opens at 6am on weekdays, but closes at 1pm on weekends, so go early. You can pre-order online or by phone, and there are Charlie bakeries in Grovedale and Barwon Heads too.

Routley's Bakery

A Geelong bakery that's been baking since 1947, with its main bakery in North Geelong and a shop in Torquay at 1/8 Gilbert Street. It's a classic pie, cake and bread shop, and the Torquay shop is open seven days: 7.30am to 5pm on weekdays, until 4pm on Saturday, and 9am to 4pm on Sunday. Routley's also delivers through Uber Eats.

Starter Culture Bakery

The newest bakery in town, opened in September 2026 at The Dunes Village on Fischer Street in north Torquay, a few minutes from the house. It mills heritage wheat on its own stone mill in Torquay, a few days before baking it into sourdough and pastries, and you can buy a bag of the flour to take home. There's Mikro coffee and some local produce too. The centre lists it as open every day from 6am to 4pm. Follow Starter Culture on Instagram for what's on the counter.

Bakers Delight

The national chain's Torquay bakery, a street-front shop at 3B, 9-13 Gilbert Street, beside the IGA. It's the earliest bakery in town, open from 5.30am every day, until 5.30pm on weekdays and 5pm on weekends. The bakery itself says it's busiest between 11am and 1pm. Good for everyday sandwich loaves, rolls and scrolls.

There's a second Bakers Delight in Torquay North, at Shop 8 in The Dunes shopping centre, 97 Merrijig Drive, the same centre as Woolworths Torquay North. It opens later, at 7am, but it's the last bakery in town to close: 6.30pm on weekdays and 6pm on weekends. If you're staying at the north end of town, it's the closest bread run.

Which one?

For a pie on the way to the beach, it's Bells. The game pies are something you won't find at home, and the beach is a short walk down the hill. Routley's, round on Gilbert Street, is the other classic pie shop.

For a loaf to take back to the house, Zeally Bay is the one, if you can make it on a Saturday morning. Otherwise, Charlie bakes its own sourdough every day, and Bakers Delight on Gilbert Street is there from 5.30am for a sandwich loaf.

On a weekend, watch the times. Charlie closes at 1pm, Bells at 3pm and the Zeally Bay bakery door at 11.30am, so the afternoon bread run is best done at Routley's or one of the two Bakers Delights. The Torquay North one stays open until 6pm on weekends.

Bread elsewhere in town

Woolworths Torquay North has an in-store bakery, and the supermarkets all sell bread. For something different, Mortadeli on Gilbert Street does Maltese pastizzi and cannoli piped to order. Our supermarkets guide covers the grocers, and the markets guide has the Saturday farmers market.

Feeding a group

If there's a houseful to feed, order ahead rather than clearing out the warmer at 1pm. Bells asks you to ring before you come in for a big order, and it does party pies and party sausage rolls at $2.90 each, which go a long way with small kids. Charlie takes pre-orders online or by phone and has a separate catering line, and Zeally Bay's Saturday pre-orders close at 1pm on Thursday.

For a lazy morning at the house, the easy option is a loaf and some pastries the afternoon before. The Bakers Delight in The Dunes at Torquay North is open latest, until 6.30pm on weekdays, next to Woolworths. In town, Bakers Delight and Routley's are both on Gilbert Street, close to the IGA and Coles.
