The classic pie shop on Gilbert Street
Routley's is at Shop 1, 8 Gilbert Street, in the middle of Torquay's shopping strip. It's an old-school pie, cake and bread shop: pies and sausage rolls, lamingtons, slices and sponges, and loaves and rolls for the house.
Where Bells Bakery is known for its game pies, Routley's is the plain, reliable Geelong pie. It's open seven days, until 4pm on Sunday, an hour later than Bells, so it's a good one to know after a day at the beach.
The story
Victor and Verna Routley started baking in 1947, in a small cake shop on Nelson Place in Williamstown. Vic was the baker there, and soon after he started, they bought the shop and ran it together. The day began at midnight, when they fired up the brick-lined "Scotch" oven with wood or briquettes. Verna remembered the order: pies in first while the oven was hottest, then the cakes, finishing with the sponges.
In 1971 they sold the business to their son Lawrie and his wife Anne, who still run it with their five children. Along the way, Routley's bought two other Geelong names, Hi-Lite Cakes in 2005 and Beaumonts Pies in 2007. Everything is now baked at the family's bakery in North Geelong and sent out to its own shops, and to cafes, canteens and caterers around the region.
What to get
The prices below are from Routley's online shop in October 2026, so the counter in Torquay may differ a little.
Pies
The meat pie comes round or square, from $8.05 online. Most of the others are $8.28: chunky pepper, beef and bacon, beef and onion, beef and mushroom, beef and kidney, jalapeno beef, and a square curry pie. There's chunky chicken and leek, a Thai chicken curry pie, a shepherd's pie, and a beef and ale pie made with Furphy ($8.62). The Beaumonts beef pie, from the Geelong pie maker Routley's took over, is still on the list too.
Sausage rolls and vegetarian
Sausage rolls, party pies and pasties, plus a small vegetarian range: a cheese and vegetable pie ($8.28), a wholemeal vegetarian pastie, a spinach quiche ($8.20) and a spinach and ricotta roll ($7).
Cakes and slices
This is the old-fashioned cake shop side: lamingtons, caramel and apple slices (from $5.98), apple turnovers, Boston buns ($11.50), chocolate iced sponges and cream donuts. For a birthday, there are gourmet cakes too, from chocolate mud cakes to cream-filled sponges.
Bread
Sandwich loaves (a high-top loaf is $4.60), a big 840g cafe loaf ($7.50), a low-gluten loaf, and six-packs of rolls, from hamburger and knot rolls ($7) to cheese and bacon rolls ($13.80). Banana bread and croissants too.

A bag of pies is an easy dinner after a long day out, and Routley's publishes its own heating instructions. These are for pies from the fridge:
A standard pie or pastie
Take off the packaging, then 25 to 30 minutes on a tray in an oven preheated to 165°C, or 20 to 25 minutes at 150°C fan-forced. The middle should be hotter than 65°C.
A family pie
Thaw it first if it's frozen. Then 50 to 55 minutes at 165°C, or 35 to 40 minutes fan-forced; you can leave it in its foil tray. To speed it up, take it out of the tray, give it 2 minutes on high in the microwave, then put it back on the tray for 25 to 30 minutes in the oven.
Party pies
Out of the packaging and spaced out on a tray, 20 to 25 minutes at 170°C.
Keep them in the fridge, at 4°C or below, until you're ready.

The other Routley's shops
Routley's has more than a dozen shops around Geelong, Lara, Colac and Melbourne's west. The nearest to Torquay is at 148 Torquay Road in Grovedale, about 20 minutes' drive on the way into Geelong. It's open from 6.30am on weekdays, but closed on Sunday. The shop at the bakery itself, 322 Melbourne Road in North Geelong, has the longest hours, until 6pm on weekdays. If you're driving through Colac, there's a Routley's on Murray Street that's open seven days.
