The pie shop on Bell Street

Bells Bakery is at Shop 7, 15 Bell Street, in the middle of Torquay, a short walk up from the beach. It's a proper local bakery: pies and sausage rolls, fresh bread, slices and cakes, and a barista on the coffee. You can sit inside or out the front, or take it all down to the sand.

It's been on Bell Street since 1999, and it's open every day from 7am to 3pm. It's known for its game pies: camel, buffalo, venison, and an emu sausage roll.

The story

The owner, Samantha, tells it on the bakery's website. She spent 13 years at Maid Marion's in Anglesea, which Bells supplied with bread, pies and cakes, before the owner of Bells talked her into joining in January 2000. Within a month she was running the place, and in September 2005 she bought it.

It hasn't all been smooth. A fire wrecked the bakery over the Easter weekend in 2013, and it took months of rebuilding before Bells reopened in early 2014. Then came the COVID shutdowns. The bakers Damien and Iris have each been there more than a decade, and Samantha says she now serves the children and grandchildren of some of her first customers.

What to get

Prices are from the savoury and sweet menus on Bells' website in October 2026.

The pies

A plain steak pie is $6.40, and the steak pies with mushroom, curry, onion, bacon or pepper are $6.90. The tradie pie, with steak, egg, cheese and bacon, is $7.90. The gourmet list is $7.90 too, with chilli con carne, butter chicken, slow-cooked lamb, Korean beef, and pulled pork with apple and crackle. Top of the range is the slow-cooked smoked brisket with home-made bourbon and maple syrup ($10.50).

The game selection

This is the bit to try at least once. A Thai green curry camel pie, a buffalo and ale pie, and a venison and red wine pie are $8.40 each, and the emu and bush spice sausage roll comes with bush tomato relish ($6.90). The bakery says the game pies are seasonal, so not every flavour is there every day.

Sausage rolls and pasties

A plain sausage roll is $5.90, with spicy chicken, cheese and bacon, dim sim, kransky and vegetarian versions at $6.90. Pasties run from $6.90 for a meat and vegetable to $8.40 for a vegan curried vegetable. Party pies and party sausage rolls are $2.90, handy for small kids.

The sweet cabinet

Old-school slices and cakes at $5.50 or so: vanilla slice, hedgehog, cherry ripe, peppermint, Tim Tam slice and lumberjack cake. Custard tarts are $4.50 and Portuguese tarts $4.80. There are muffins ($6), cookies like honey joys and freckles ($3.50), croissants ($4.50) and jam or cinnamon doughnuts. The pastries rotate, and the bakery says more of them are on at weekends.

Bread, sandwiches and coffee

Bread is baked daily: white, wholemeal, multigrain, low-GI and a light rye pumpkin loaf, plus rolls. The cafe side does made-to-order sandwiches and rolls, and the coffee is locally roasted Honeybird.

Vegan, vegetarian and allergies

There are vegan pies, pastries and bread, including a sweet potato and butternut pumpkin pasty, a spinach and mushroom sausage roll and a lentil and mushroom roll. For anyone with a serious allergy, the bakery asks you to talk to the staff before ordering, and it can give ingredient information.
