The shop
Bell Street Fish and Chips is at 32A Bell Street, next to the Torquay Hotel on the south side of the town centre. It's a classic takeaway: flake, chips, potato cakes and dim sims, wrapped in paper and carried down to the beach. The Esplanade is a few minutes' walk down the hill, and it's about five minutes' drive from north Torquay. It's our own favourite for fish and chips in Torquay.
It's the one to pick if you want an afternoon feed. It runs straight through from midday to 8pm, with no break between lunch and dinner, so a late lunch after a surf or an early tea at 4pm both work.
What to order
The menu has flake (local gummy shark), butterfish, blue grenadier, barramundi, flathead tails and King George whiting. Any of them can be grilled instead of battered for 90 cents more. Prices below are from the menu in October 2026.
Packs
The Classic Pack ($18.50) is flake, a potato cake, a dim sim, chips and tartare, which is the standard Aussie order in one go. There's a Bell's Pack for two ($39), butterfish, calamari and seafood packs, and a Family Pack ($74) with four flake, four potato cakes, four dim sims, four nuggets, large chips and tomato and tartare sauce. Packs come as listed, with no substitutes.
For the kids
A Kids Pack of six nuggets and chips, and a Snack Pack with three fish bites. Both are a good size for small appetites.
If someone doesn't want fish
Beef, chicken, fish and veggie burgers, and a lamb or fish souvlaki. Handy when one of the group has gone along with fish and chips but would rather have a burger.
Hours and ordering
When we checked in October 2026, the shop's website listed Tuesday to Sunday, 12pm to 8pm, and closed on Mondays. If it's a Monday, Fisho's and Captain's Catch are both open.
You can order online from the website and pick up. The shop says that when it's busy the staff can't always get to the phone, so on a summer evening ordering online (or just walking in) is quicker than ringing. The number is (03) 5261 2774.
For a big order, the Family Pack saves you building it piece by piece. Because packs can't be changed, order grilled fish as separate pieces.
Where to eat it
Walk down Bell Street to The Esplanade and you've got two choices, both about ten minutes on foot. Turn left for the foreshore lawns above Front Beach, with the playground close by, or right for the surf beach and the walk out to Point Danger. Our Torquay beaches guide has more on each.
The lawns are the easier picnic with kids, and Front Beach is usually the calmer water if anyone wants a swim after. Torquay's afternoon wind can be rude in spring. If the paper's flapping before you've reached the sand, there's no shame in eating it at home.
Bell Street is also the old heart of town for a drink. The Torquay Hotel is next door, and Blackman's Brewery is a little further along the street.
