The shop

Lucia's is a fish and chip shop at 33 Surf Coast Highway, on the corner by Geelong Road and Anderson Street. It used to be Flippin' Fresh, and it still has the same phone number, (03) 5261 6146, so older maps and directories that show Flippin' Fresh are pointing at the same shop. Its website describes it as a local family business.

It's on the highway rather than the beachfront, about a kilometre from The Esplanade, and about five minutes' drive from north Torquay. That makes it an easy one to collect on the way back to wherever you're staying. There's a wood-fired pizza shop and bar on the way too: in October 2026 the website still had both as "opening soon".

What to order

The online menu has flake, butterfish and blue grenadier, fried or grilled, plus other seafood as it comes in (some items were marked out of stock when we looked). Prices are from October 2026.

Packs

The Flake Pack ($19.90) is flake, chips, tartare and lemon. There are grilled packs as well as fried, and a Family Pack ($84) for a bigger order.

The dim sims

Lucia's fried dim sims are cut in half, battered and then fried, which is a bit different from the usual. There are potato cakes and nuggets too, and fish and beef burgers for anyone who isn't after fish and chips. For the kids, a few nuggets or a potato cake with chips is an easy order.

Low-gluten chips

Lucia's is the shop to know about if someone in the group avoids gluten. Its fish and chips page says the chips are cooked in separate fryers from the battered food, and the grilled seafood is dusted in chickpea flour. It calls both low gluten rather than gluten free, because there's flour in the kitchen and it can't rule out cross-contamination. For coeliacs, have a word with the staff when you order, and ask for the grilled fish and chips to be packed separately from anything battered.

Hours and ordering

The website says it's open seven nights from 4.30pm, with lunch on weekends. The online ordering in October 2026 showed fewer sessions, though, with pickup times like these:

  • Thursday and Friday: from 4.30pm to about 7.30pm (7.45pm on Friday)
  • Saturday and Sunday: lunch from 12.15pm, and dinner from 4.45pm to about 7.30pm
  • Monday to Wednesday: no online orders

So early in the week, ring first. Online ordering is the easy way the rest of the week: the shop says staff may not be able to answer the phone when it's busy. When the pizza side opens, the ordering page asks for pizza and fish and chips to be ordered separately, as they're cooked and collected in different places.

Where to eat it

It's about a kilometre to the water from here, so most people drive down to the foreshore above Front Beach or to Fishermans Beach. Our Torquay beaches guide has the details. On a cold or wet night, take it home: our rainy day guide has ideas for the rest of the day.

Lucia's Torquay FAQ

Is Lucia's the old Flippin' Fresh?

Yes. It's at the same address, 33 Surf Coast Highway, with the same phone number, (03) 5261 6146.

Is it open early in the week?

The website says seven nights, but online ordering didn't take orders from Monday to Wednesday when we checked. Ring before an early-week visit.

Are the chips gluten free?

They're cooked in separate fryers and the shop calls them low gluten, but it can't guarantee gluten free because there's flour in the kitchen.

Is the pizza shop open?

Not yet. In October 2026 the pizza shop and bar were still "opening soon".

Can I get grilled fish?

Yes, as single pieces or in the grilled packs.
