The shop on Gilbert Street

Captain's Catch is at 34 Gilbert Street, Torquay's main shopping street, up near the Pearl Street end. It used to be Gilbert Street Torquay Fish & Chips, and some maps and directories still use the old name, so don't be thrown if you see both at the same address with the same phone number.

The shop says fish and chips have been sold on this spot since 1954. It's a couple of hundred metres from Front Beach and the foreshore, the closest of the three takeaway shops to the water, and about five minutes' drive from north Torquay.

What to order

The menu has butterfish, whiting, gummy flake, blue grenadier and barramundi, and any of them can be grilled for $1 more. Prices below are from the website menu in October 2026. The online ordering prices were a little higher, so go by the total at checkout.

Packs

Flake and chips is $14.60. The Single Special Flake Pack ($19.40) adds a potato cake, a dim sim and tartare, and the Captain's Flake 2Pack ($38.50) doubles it for two. The Sailors Family Pack ($69.99) has four flake, four potato cakes, four dim sims, large chips and sauce. The seafood packs mix butterfish with scallops, prawns and calamari, and the "Seagull" packs are for the non-fish seafood fans: six battered prawns, calamari or salt and pepper squid, each with chips.

Sides and the rest

This is a proper old-school takeaway counter: potato cakes ($2), dim sims steamed or fried, Chiko Rolls, corn jacks, battered savs, crab sticks and local scallops. Chips with gravy are $10. For the non-fish eaters there are beef, chicken, fish and veggie burgers (The Lot is $13.20) and a scotch fillet steak sandwich. Sauces are extra unless they come in a pack.

Dessert

Jam doughnuts, pineapple fritters and, for the brave, a fried Mars Bar ($3.50).

For the kids

Kids' packs of four nuggets ($10.60) or two fish bites ($11.80), each with mini chips and tomato sauce.

Hours and ordering

The shop's online ordering, linked from its website, showed these hours in October 2026:

  • Wednesday to Monday: 11.30am to 3pm, then 4pm to 7.30pm
  • Tuesday: closed

So it's open on Mondays, when Bell Street is shut, and it closes for an hour in the afternoon. Order online for pickup, or call (03) 5261 3423. There's a 10% surcharge on public holidays.

Where to eat it

Walk down Gilbert Street to The Esplanade and you're on the foreshore above Front Beach, with the lawns and the playground. It's a two-minute walk, so the chips are still hot when you sit down. Front Beach is patrolled in summer and is usually calm, which makes it an easy spot for kids to have a paddle after tea.

For a longer stroll, follow the foreshore path north to Fishermans Beach, or south past Cosy Corner to Point Danger. Our Torquay beaches guide covers them all.

Gilbert Street is the main shopping strip, with a bakery and cafés, so it's easy to grab drinks on the way.
