Torquay's sourdough bakery

If you've had good sourdough at a cafe around here, there's a fair chance it came from Zeally Bay Sourdough. It shares its name with Zeally Bay, the bay in front of Torquay, and it bakes in a wholesale bakery at 10 Sawmills Way, in the industrial estate in north-west Torquay. The menus give it away: Bomboras toasts ZBS sourdough, The Kyn serves Zeally Bay focaccia with stracciatella, and Cafe El Nido puts it under its eggs.

It's mainly a wholesale bakery, so there's no cafe. But once a week the doors open to the public, and you can buy the bread straight from the bakers.

The bakery door

The bakery door is open every Saturday from 9am to 11.30am at 10A Sawmills Way. You can turn up and buy what's on the racks, or pre-order online by 1pm on Thursday and collect on Saturday morning. If you want something particular, like a gluten-friendly loaf or a panettone at Christmas, pre-ordering is the safe bet.

It's about six minutes' drive from north Torquay. That makes it an easy Saturday morning job: bread from the bakery door, then down to the Torquay Farmers Market for the rest of the weekend's food.

What's on the racks

These prices are from the bakery door's online pre-order list in October 2026.

Loaves

Most of the 700g loaves are $11: the High Top Tin, the Southern Casalinga and the Mallee biodynamic. The Seed and Sprout and the spelt, buckwheat and polenta loaf are $12, and a fruit loaf is $13.50. There's a baguette ($7), a Genovese focaccia ($7) and seeded ficelle sticks ($2.90).

Gluten-friendly

Two gluten-free loaves: millet and linseed ($14.90) and sprouted lentil and quinoa ($15.90). The bakery calls them gluten friendly, so check with them if you need it strictly gluten free.

For the house

Pizza bases ($9 for 400g) and vegan milk buns ($9.60) are handy for a night in. The pantry shelf has the bakery's own granola ($17.50 for 450g) and muesli, sourdough breadcrumbs, organic oats, Mount Zero olives and olive oil, and local jams.

Seasonal

A sourdough panettone ($50) and a sake and almond fruit cake ($34) were on the seasonal list, ahead of Christmas.

The story

Zeally Bay Sourdough started in 2007, and the bakery says it was Victoria's first independently audited Certified Organic bakery. Everything is baked with Certified Organic and biodynamic ingredients.

The leaven is older than the business. It was started in 1981 at Wholefoods Kitchen, and the family behind the bakery has kept it going for more than forty years. The bread is long-fermented and baked on a stone hearth.

Making a loaf last the weekend

A Saturday loaf will easily see out a long weekend. The bakery's own storage advice says its long-ferment sourdough keeps for a week or more if it's sealed: good fresh for a few days, then best toasted. Wrap it in a tea towel or paper rather than a plastic bag, which softens the crust.

To bring a day-old loaf back, the bakers suggest about 10 minutes in the oven at 190°C, which works especially well for the baguette. If you're freezing some to take home, slice it first and seal it well.

Buying it the rest of the week

You don't have to wait for Saturday. In Torquay, the bakery's stockist list includes Dusty's Bulk Foods on Gilbert Street, Peach's Torquay on the Surf Coast Highway, and Surfcoast Wholefoods in the Torquay Village shopping centre on Bristol Road.

The granola, muesli and breadcrumbs are also sold through the bakery's online shop. For anything wholesale, the office is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, on (03) 5264 7883.

Nearby

For pies and coffee rather than loaves, Bells Bakery on Bell Street is open every day. Our bakeries guide has the rest, and the breakfast guide has the cafes that serve Zeally Bay bread.
