Stocking the kitchen
Torquay has five supermarkets: two Woolworths, a Coles, an Aldi and an independent IGA. That's plenty for a town this size, and it means there's no need to fill the car in Melbourne. All five are open seven days, and the Woolworths and the Coles stay open until 10pm.
Four of them are in or near the town centre, around Bristol Road and Gilbert Street, and the other is the Woolworths in the Dunes Village shops in north Torquay. On top of that, there's a good independent grocer on the highway, a couple of butchers, a fishmonger and a bulk wholefoods shop. Hours below are from each store's own website in October 2026.

The supermarkets
Woolworths Torquay North
The newer Woolworths, in the Dunes Village shops at 222 Fischer Street, on the corner of Merrijig Drive. It's the closest supermarket to the north end of town. It has an in-store bakery, a meat counter that cuts to order, seafood, and a BWS bottle shop next door. Open 7am to 10pm every day; phone (03) 5264 9000.
Woolworths Torquay
The town-centre Woolworths, a standalone store on the corner of Bristol Road and Walker Street. Same hours, 7am to 10pm daily, with seafood, an adjoining BWS, and a quiet hour from 10.30am Monday to Thursday. Phone (03) 5264 9025.
Coles Torquay
The anchor of the Torquay Village shopping centre at 41 Bristol Road, a short walk along Bristol Road from the town-centre Woolworths. Open 7am to 10pm every day, with a carry-to-car service if you ask. The centre has about 15 specialty shops as well, including Charlie Bakery and Surfcoast Wholefoods. Phone (03) 5264 3100.
Aldi Torquay
At 14-18 Winki Way, on the Geelong side of town off the Surf Coast Highway. Open 8.30am to 8pm every day. The Special Buys go out on Wednesdays and Saturdays, if you've ever wanted to come home from a beach holiday with a kayak or a pizza oven.
Ryans IGA Torquay
The independent supermarket, at 9 Gilbert Street in the middle of town, next to Bakers Delight. It's smaller than the big three, and it's the handiest for a quick shop if you're already on Gilbert Street or near the beach. Open 7am to 8pm daily; phone (03) 5261 4000.
Click and collect
Both Woolworths stores do pick up, including Direct to Boot, where you stay in the car and they load the shopping in. Coles does Click and Collect at Torquay Village. On arrival day, ordering ahead and picking it up on the way in saves wandering the aisles with tired kids. Coles also turns up on Uber Eats if you'd rather have it delivered.
The good bits: grocers, butchers and fish
Peach's Torquay
A family-owned grocer at 132 Surf Coast Highway, with seasonal and organic fruit and veg from local growers, a deli, pantry and dairy, take-home meals, and wine and beer from small local producers. It stocks Zeally Bay sourdough too. Open 8.30am to 6pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 5.30pm on Saturday. It's closed on Sundays.
Dusty's Bulk Foods
A family-run bulk wholefoods shop at 2/12 Gilbert Street, with mostly Certified Organic nuts, grains, dried fruit, snacks, tea and baking supplies. Bring your own jars or bags. Open 9am to 5.30pm on weekdays, 9am to 5pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday, and closed on Christmas Day.
Butchers
Surf Coast Quality Meats at 30A Gilbert Street is a family-owned independent butcher; phone (03) 5261 6654. Benno's Meating Place, which also has a shop in Barwon Heads, is at 9/8 Gilbert Street and opens at 6am. Either is a better bet than the supermarket for a barbecue.
Fish
Both Woolworths stores have a seafood counter, and the Saturday farmers market has smoked fish. Or catch your own: our fishing guide has the spots.
Bottle shops
There's a BWS next to both Woolworths and a Liquorland next to Coles, and our bottle shops guide has the rest. For something local, Peach's has wine and beer from small regional producers, and our wineries and breweries guides have the cellar doors and taprooms.
Deli and bread
The grocer at Mortadeli, in the courtyard at 4-6 Gilbert Street, has cheese, cold cuts and tinned fish for a grazing board. For bread, see our bakeries guide.
Markets
On Saturday mornings, the Torquay Farmers Market on Merrijig Drive has fruit and veg, meat, eggs, cheese, bread, smoked fish and honey. Our markets guide has the dates and the other markets around the area.
Public holidays
Victoria has two and a half restricted trading days: Good Friday, Christmas Day, and Anzac Day until 1pm. On those days the big supermarkets are shut, so shop the day before. Smaller shops, cafes, takeaways, chemists and servos can still open. The rest of the public holidays, including Boxing Day and New Year's Day, are normal trading days, though hours can be shorter, so check the store's website first.
If you're here over the summer holidays, the supermarkets get very busy, especially between Christmas and New Year. Our Christmas and New Year guide has more on getting organised.
