Where the burgers are

Torquay doesn't have a lot of dedicated burger joints, but it has a lot of good burgers. There's a food truck at a brewery, a burger shack in the shopping centre, cafes that do a burger with the beach in front of you, and pubs and takeaways for the rest.

Everything here is within about five minutes' drive of north Torquay, with Jan Juc a few minutes further. Prices are from each place's menu in October 2026. For the big chains, see our fast food guide.

The burger places

Gypsy Burger

The food truck parked out the front of Bells Beach Brewing on Baines Crescent, among the surf outlets, from Thursday to Sunday. It's run by Adrian and Jessica Lal, a chef and a barista who started The Gypsy's Lunchbox in Torquay in 2014, and most of the meat comes from Jess's family's farms. The burgers on the menu on its website are Angus beef and bacon ($16.75), a double beef and bacon with smoky barbecue sauce ($21.50), Southern-fried chicken ($16.50), a beer-battered flathead "fish butty" ($16.50), and fried cauliflower and smashed falafel burgers for the vegetarians. Loaded fries are $13, and the kids' cheeseburger is $13. Eat it at the brewery with a beer, or order online for pickup or home delivery around Torquay. Kids and dogs are welcome at the brewery.

Betty's Burgers

The Noosa burger chain's Torquay shack, in the Torquay Village shopping centre at 41 Bristol Road. A local family, the Gilberts, opened it in April 2022 after falling for the original on a Noosa holiday. The Betty's Classic is Angus beef, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and Betty's sauce, and you can add a mushroom patty, avocado, an egg or a gluten-free bun. There are vegan burgers, onion rings, a kids' menu, and the Concretes: thick frozen custard with mix-ins. It's open from 11am every day, until 9pm, or 10pm on Friday and Saturday. Phone (03) 5261 3550.

Burgers by the beach

The Salty Dog Cafe

The kiosk on Fishermans Beach does three burgers, all with fries: the Saltydawg double cheeseburger ($18), a fried chicken burger with chipotle mayo ($22) and a 180g Angus burger with bacon ($23). They're on the all-day menu from 6am, so a burger for breakfast is allowed. The kitchen closes at 2pm.

Bomboras

On the foreshore at 37 The Esplanade, Bombie's cheese burger with fries ($28) is on the lunch menu, from midday. Lunch can be booked, which helps on a summer weekend.

Swell Cafe, Jan Juc

The Big Juc is an Otway beef burger with American cheese and pickles ($22.50), and there's a chicken burger with bacon, avocado and mango mayo ($19.50) and a mushroom and halloumi burger ($18.50). Fries are $5.50 extra. It's open from 6am to 4pm every day, so it's a good one after a surf at Jan Juc.

Pub and brewery burgers

4 Pines x Boardriders

The bar at Surf City Plaza, with a big patio. A cheeseburger, a crumbed chicken burger, a pork belly and pineapple burger and a vegan burger, all with fries, plus a cheeseburger on the kids' menu. You order at the bar, and dogs are welcome.

Blackman's Brewery

The brewpub at 26 Bell Street does wood-fired pizza and burgers to go with the 22 taps, with a kids' menu and online orders for pickup.

Torquay Hotel

The big pub on Bell Street, open seven days, with burgers on the bar menu alongside the parma and the pizzas. It's the easy pick for a big group.

Point Danger Beach House

Not a burger place, but its crumbed rockling burger with fries ($30) is the fanciest fish burger in town, with Front Beach across the road. There's a cheeseburger on the kids' menu too.

Takeaway burgers

The fish and chip shops all do burgers. At Captain's Catch on Gilbert Street there are beef, chicken, fish and veggie burgers, and The Lot is $13.20, one of the cheapest burgers in town. Lucia's on the highway does fish and beef burgers too. They're a good way to keep the non-fish-eaters happy on a fish and chip night.

For a burger with your breakfast, Cafe El Nido in north Torquay does a breakfast burger ($22) and a crispy chicken joi burger ($26), and Pond Cafe does a brekkie burger on a milk bun ($22). Our breakfast guide has both.

Which one?

For a proper burger night, it's Gypsy Burger with a beer at Bells Beach Brewing, from Thursday to Sunday. Earlier in the week, or with kids who'd like an ice cream after, Betty's is open every day. For lunch by the water, the Salty Dog's double cheeseburger is the cheapest beachfront burger in town, and Swell's Big Juc is the one in Jan Juc.

On a budget, Captain's Catch's The Lot is hard to beat. And if the group can't agree, 4 Pines and the Torquay Hotel have burgers for some and parmas, pizza and fish for everyone else.
