What Bomboras is
Bomboras is a daytime cafe and restaurant at 37 The Esplanade, looking out over the water in the middle of Torquay. It describes itself as relaxed daytime dining, with breakfast, lunch and afternoon drinks every day.
The key word there is daytime. Bomboras opens early and closes in the late afternoon. It isn't a dinner spot, whatever you might read elsewhere. Think brekkie after an early surf, a long lunch with the ocean in front of you, or a drink in the arvo before you head home.
This is an independent guide; menus, prices and hours change, so check Bomboras' website before you go.
Breakfast
Breakfast runs from 7:30am to 11am every day, according to the Bomboras bookings page. Most of the bread is ZBS sourdough, which the menu lists by name. Prices below are from the current menu on the website and will change.
The basics
Sourdough toast with honey, house jam or Vegemite ($10), toasted crumpets with whipped honeycomb butter ($16), house granola with poached pear ($19), and two eggs your way on sourdough ($16) with the usual add-ons.
Something bigger
Avocado toast on multigrain with poached eggs ($27), eggs benedict with smokehouse ham ($26), and a breakfast bun with bacon, egg, hash brown and chipotle mayo ($26).
The ones on the "Bombies favourites" list
A toasted "croffle", a croissant waffle with white chocolate ricotta, blueberries and lemon curd ($24). Turkish eggs with tomato jam, yoghurt, chorizo and chilli oil ($28). A pork and fennel sausage with house baked beans ($28), a breakfast plate, and breakfast greens with a poached egg and goat's curd ($25).
Lunch
Lunch is from 12pm to 2:30pm on weekdays and 12pm to 3pm on weekends. The menu says all its seafood is Australian.
Snacks and small plates
Warm focaccia with whipped garlic ricotta, Mt Zero olives, oysters, goat's cheese and jalapeño croquettes, kingfish sashimi with a green chilli dressing ($28), half-shell scallops, and fried dimmies. Good for sharing with a drink.
Bigger plates
Bombie's cheese burger with fries ($28), seafood linguine with prawns and mussels ($38), seared swordfish ($38), confit chicken ($35), oven-baked gnocchi ($33), roast pumpkin with a lentil pilaf ($28), and a grilled scotch fillet ($52).
Sides and dessert
Fries, a cos salad with buttermilk caesar, broccolini with romesco. Then chocolate sponge, crème caramel, or a cheese plate if you're settling in for the afternoon.
Bookings and walk-ins
Breakfast is walk-in only
You can't book breakfast. Just turn up. If you've got a group and want a special breakfast or brunch, Bomboras asks you to email them to arrange it.
Lunch can be booked
Lunch bookings are taken online through the Bomboras website. You can also call (03) 5264 7881 during opening hours. On a summer weekend, we'd book.
Opening hours
The website lists 6am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 5pm on weekends. Breakfast and lunch are served in set windows inside those hours. Check the website before you go, as hours change.
Kids
There's a kids' menu for under-12s. At breakfast: granola with fruit and yoghurt ($9), egg and bacon on toast ($11), or a mini croffle with ice cream and maple syrup ($11). At lunch: a cheeseburger with fries, linguine with tomato sugo, a chicken schnitty with fries, and an ice cream sundae. With small kids and a walk-in breakfast, earlier is usually easier.
Getting there from Holyday House
Holyday House is in north Torquay, near Whites Beach. Bomboras is about 5 minutes away by car, or about 25 minutes on foot along the foreshore. On a calm morning that walk is a good start to the day.
Parking on The Esplanade gets tight in summer and on sunny weekends, so be ready to use a side street. Bomboras opens at 6am on weekdays, so an early surf and then a coffee here is easy to pull off.
Nearby
Bomboras is part of a short run of places on The Esplanade. Pond Cafe is on the same strip if you just want a coffee, Fisho's is close by for fish and chips, and the Surf Hotel is there for dinner on the nights it's open, once Bomboras has closed. The beach is across the road. Go for a dip first, then eat, or the other way round if it's cold.
