What it is

4 Pines x Boardriders is a bar and restaurant at Shop 1/61 Surf Coast Highway, in Surf City Plaza, Torquay's main surf shopping strip. It's run by 4 Pines, the brewery from Manly in Sydney, together with Boardriders, the company behind Quiksilver and Roxy, whose Torquay store is at the same address.

The draw is the patio: a big outdoor space clad in reclaimed timber, with tall plant walls. It's open seven days, dogs are welcome, and it's an easy place to sit while half the group finishes shopping. It isn't a brewery, though. The beer is brewed by 4 Pines elsewhere and poured here.

How it came about

Boardriders had run its own hospitality spaces at its Torquay and Coolangatta stores for a few years. In 2019, 4 Pines partnered with Boardriders to run them, with a new bar fit-out and artwork at both. Coolangatta opened at the end of October 2019, and Torquay followed later that year.

4 Pines itself started with one brewpub in Manly in 2008, after what the brewery describes as a post-surf chat between a father and son. It's named after four pine trees that were cut down on the Manly foreshore during the Second World War to make room for gun emplacements. It's a certified B Corp and a 1% for the Planet member, and these days it's part of Asahi Beverages.

Drinks

There are six taps of 4 Pines beer, plus beer-inspired cocktails and a short wine list. On weekdays from 4pm to 6pm there's a happy hour, with core range pints, house wine and fries at $8.50 when we checked. It doesn't run on public holidays or event days.

If you're after beer brewed on the premises, the Torquay Taphouse and Bells Beach Brewing are around the corner on Baines Crescent.

Food

You order and pay at the bar. The Winter 2026 menu had:

To share

Spiced chicken wings, loaded fries with brisket, karaage chicken, calamari, a whipped ricotta and truffle dip with focaccia, tacos and black bean nachos.

Burgers

A cheeseburger, a crumbed chicken burger, a pork belly and pineapple burger, a vegan one and a steak sandwich, all with fries.

Bigger plates

Fish and chips in a lager batter, a chicken parma, wagyu bolognese, beef brisket, a miso eggplant and a couple of salads and bowls.

For the kids

A "Groms" menu for under-12s: nuggets, a cheeseburger or a mini parma, each with fries.

The menu marks vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes. A 15% surcharge applies on public holidays. There are weekly specials too, listed under what's on.

Dogs, kids and functions

Dogs

"Dogs encouraged every day", says 4 Pines, and Sundays have a "Yappy Hour". It's one of the easiest places in town to bring the dog for a drink.

Kids

With a kids' menu and a big outdoor area, it works well for families, especially in the daytime.

Functions

There are three-hour food and drink packages for groups, and a function guide on the 4 Pines website.

Hours and bookings

When we checked in October 2026, it was open seven days, from 11am to 10pm Sunday to Thursday and 11am to 11pm on Friday and Saturday. You can book a table through the 4 Pines Torquay page, which also has the menus and what's on.

Getting there and what's nearby

Surf City Plaza is on the Surf Coast Highway at the Geelong end of town, about five minutes' drive from north Torquay, with parking around the plaza. If you're drinking, book a lift home ahead of time, because taxis and rideshare are thin on the ground late.

It's right among the shops. The Boardriders store (Quiksilver and Roxy) is at the same address, the big Rip Curl store is along the strip, and the factory outlets are around the corner on Baines Crescent. The Australian National Surfing Museum is in the same precinct, so it's an easy rainy-day lunch stop.
