Kite Surfing in Torquay

Consistent wind, open beaches, and a growing kite scene on the Surf Coast

Kiteboarding on the Surf Coast

The Surf Coast's long, open beaches and reliable sea breezes make it an excellent region for kite surfing. While not as well-known as St Kilda or Safety Beach, the spots near Torquay offer more space, fewer crowds, and stunning coastal scenery.

Holyday House is 400m from the beach — you can be rigging up within minutes of walking out the door.

Best Kite Spots

Point Impossible

The premier kite spot on the Surf Coast. Wide, open beach with consistent cross-shore winds from the south-west. Plenty of room to launch and land. Works best on the afternoon sea breeze. 10 min drive from the house.

Thirteenth Beach

A long, exposed beach between Torquay and Barwon Heads. Excellent for kiting when the wind swings more southerly. Less sheltered than Point Impossible — suited to confident riders. 15 min drive.

Breamlea

A quieter option between Point Impossible and Thirteenth Beach. Good space for setting up and fewer people in the water. Check wind direction before heading out. 10 min drive.

Conditions & Best Time

The Surf Coast gets reliable thermal sea breezes from October to March, typically building from midday to late afternoon. South-west to southerly winds are the most common and work well for the main kite spots.

Summer

The best season. Reliable afternoon sea breezes 15–25 knots. Warm water. Long evenings. The prime kite season runs November to March.

Autumn

Sea breezes fade but frontal systems bring strong winds. Less predictable but can deliver excellent sessions on the right day.

Winter

Cold and powerful. Strong north-westerly to south-westerly winds from storm systems. Cold water (12–14°C) — thick wetsuit essential. For experienced riders.

Spring

Sea breezes return. Can be gusty and variable. Good sessions when the wind stabilises from the south-west.

Lessons & Hire

Kite surfing lessons are available from operators based in the Geelong/Bellarine region who travel to Surf Coast beaches for sessions. Most offer beginner packages including equipment, safety briefing, and on-water instruction.

Check local conditions on Seabreeze or Windguru before heading out. The afternoon sea breeze is the most reliable window.
