The restaurant

The Cave is tucked into the shops on the clifftop at Jan Juc, at 18/20 Princes Terrace, about 10 minutes' drive from north Torquay over Spring Creek. It's a licensed wood-fired pizza restaurant, with tables inside and out, takeaway and local delivery.

Of the pizza places around Torquay, it's the one for a sit-down dinner with a glass of local wine. The list is mostly from the region, with Brown Magpie wines from Modewarre and a Lethbridge pinot noir, plus a Bells Beach session ale and Prickly Otway beers.

What people say

The Cave rates 4.6 on Google from more than 130 reviews, and many of them are from locals who come every week. Reviewers like the thin, wood-fired crust, the Cave specials, the cosy room on a cold night and the friendly team. One regular says it has the best gluten-free bases they've had, and recommends the T-Rex, the kids' cheese pizza and the dessert pizza.

A night out in Jan Juc

On a warm evening, it's a good excuse for a trip over to Jan Juc. Go early for a walk along the clifftops or down to Jan Juc beach, then have a pizza and a glass of local wine in the shops at the top of the hill. If you'd rather a full dinner, Bird Rock is in the same shops. Our Jan Juc guide has more.

With kids, there are small kids' pizzas and a dessert pizza to share, and there's outdoor seating. Book for a Friday or Saturday night, especially in summer.

Takeaway

The Cave does takeaway and local delivery as well, so you can order online and pick up on the way home. The wood-fired pizzas are best eaten fresh, though. If you're driving back to north Torquay, it's about 10 minutes.

How it compares

The Cave is a licensed, wood-fired pizza restaurant where pizza is the main event. Il Matto on Bell Street does wood-fired pizza too, as part of a full Italian menu. For takeaway on a Monday to Wednesday night, when The Cave is closed, try Town & Country, Dough Bros, Bubba Pizza or Sugo in Torquay.
