The shop on Bell Street

Nordenfine Ice Cream Co is at 34 Bell Street, in the old centre of Torquay, right next door to Bell Street Fish and Chips. It's about five minutes' drive from north Torquay, and The Esplanade is a few minutes' walk down the hill.

It's a local business. Two brothers started it in 1999 with a simple idea: properly made ice cream that people could afford to eat any day, not just on special occasions. Twenty-seven years on there are three shops along the coast, in Torquay, Anglesea and Apollo Bay.

The Torquay shop is the home base. Everything is made here, from the first mix to the finished tub, and then driven down the Great Ocean Road to the other two cabinets. So if you've had a Nordenfine cone in Apollo Bay, it came from Bell Street.

Don't expect a slick fit-out. The shop is deliberately old-school: classic ice cream cabinets and big tubs. The owners say every dollar they don't spend on decor goes into the ice cream instead. We like that.

What to order

Nordenfine makes ice cream, gelato and frozen yoghurt in small batches. It says there are more than 100 flavours in its recipe library, and the cabinet changes with the season, so what's on today won't be the whole list. The flavours page shows the regulars.

Salted Caramel

The one to try first. At the 2026 Australian Dairy Awards of Excellence it won three trophies: Highest Scoring Ice Cream, Highest Scoring Frozen Product (across every frozen dairy entry in the show) and Highest Scoring Product Containing Natural Flavours and Colours. It also took the standard ice cream trophy at the Victorian Dairy Awards. The shop says it's the same recipe it's made since 1999.

Frozen yoghurt

Raspberry & Finger Lime Yoghurt was the Highest Scoring Frozen Yoghurt in 2026. Berry Swirl Yoghurt won the same trophy in 2024 and 2025, and back in 2010 too.

The classics

Vanilla, Strawberry, Honeycomb, Coffee Fudge, Cookies & Cream, Rum & Raisin, Macadamia and Spearmint Choc Chip have all picked up medals. Lemon Curd Cheese Cake took gold in 2026, and Death by Chocolate has been medalled most years they've entered. Pistachio, Mango, Passionfruit and Liquorice are on the list as well.

For the kids (and the sweet tooth)

Milo Monkey, M&M Heaven, Bubble Gum, Cherry Ripe and Cookie Dough. Kateaser is caramel ice cream with Kit Kat, Maltesers and chocolate fudge. Cleopatra is nougat with Toblerone and caramel fudge, and Half Baked Chocolate Cake is exactly what it sounds like. Revenge of the Nerds is a mild lemon gelato with sour Wonka Nerds through it.

Gelato and non-dairy

The gelatos include Lemon, Blood Orange and Rogue Wave. Bacio is a non-dairy chocolate and hazelnut gelato, the one to point to if someone in the group can't do dairy. For other allergy questions, ask the staff at the counter.

Hours, prices and delivery

When we checked in October 2026, the Torquay shop's listed hours (shown on the Nordenfine website from its Google profile) were:

  • Every day: 12pm to 9pm

Hours can change with the season, so check before you go if you're heading in late. The phone number is (03) 5261 5211.

The shop doesn't publish scoop prices online, so we haven't listed them. Its whole pitch is everyday ice cream at everyday prices. You can also order Torquay tubs for delivery through Uber Eats, linked from the website, which is handy on a wet night. Gift cards are sold in all three shops.

Planning a party? Nordenfine hires out ice cream carts for birthdays, weddings and school fetes along the coast, and its sister business co2ade runs a lemonade van. Enquiries go through the events page.

Bell Street after dark

Nordenfine's 9pm close makes it the obvious dessert stop after tea on Bell Street. Get fish and chips next door, then a cone. Or eat at Il Matto a little further along at number 15, and walk down for a scoop afterwards. Blackman's Brewery and the Torquay Hotel are on the same street for the adults.

Cones are best eaten walking. Head down Bell Street to The Esplanade, then left for the lawns above Front Beach or right towards the surf beach and Point Danger. On a windy arvo it's a race between you and the drips.
