The shop on Gilbert Street

Augustus Gelatery is at Retail 3, 3-4 Gilbert Street, at the beach end of Torquay's main shopping street, a few doors up from The Esplanade. The foreshore above Front Beach is a minute's walk away. It's about five minutes' drive from north Torquay, and the shop says there's parking on Gilbert Street or The Esplanade.

It's part of a chain. Augustus started in Melbourne, set up by Joe Molinaro and Paul Vernuccio, two friends who'd already spent years in hospitality there. Its store finder listed around 40 shops when we checked in October 2026, most of them in Victoria, and new ones are run by franchise partners. The Geelong shop on Gheringhap Street opened in 2019 and Waurn Ponds followed in 2021. It's the one to know about after dinner, as it stays open until 9.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

There's seating inside and out. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables, but not inside.

What to order

The chain says its stores usually have 33 to 36 flavours in the cabinet at once, with new specials every month, so what's in Torquay on the day won't match the online menu exactly. The menu items below are from the website in October 2026.

Gelato

The classics are all there: pistachio, hazelnut, espresso, vanilla bean, chocolate, salted caramel and mint choc chip. Then come the sweet-tooth flavours that kids go for: Kinder, Nutella, Snickas, cookies and cream, bubble gum, Milo and Tim Tam, boysenberry cheesecake and a dulce de leche made with Biscoff. There's usually a mystery flavour and a couple of limited editions too.

Sorbet and plant-based gelato

The sorbets are dairy-free: lemon, mango, passionfruit, green apple, mixed berries, and raspberry, pineapple and lychee. There's also a run of plant-based gelato, such as coconut and pandan, chocolate and honeycomb, and peanut butter cookie dough. Everything is made and served where there's dairy around, so there may be traces.

Shakes

Shakes are made with the gelato. The menu has Oreo, Biscoff, Snickas, Nutella, bubble gum, passion mango and a summer fruit crush, or you can make up your own from the cabinet.

Hot desserts

For a cold night: a hot brownie or a loaded cookie (Biscoff, Nutella, or sprinkles and choc chip), each served with a scoop of gelato.

Cakes and tubs

The gelato cakes include a Ferrero cake, a lemon meringue bombe Alaska and a Biscoff dulce cake. Some are in the freezer ready to buy, or call the shop to put one aside; they're pickup only. Takeaway tubs come in 0.5 litre (up to two flavours) and 1 litre (up to three), handy for dessert back where you're staying.

How it's made

Augustus says it makes its gelato in single batches with fresh milk, without large-scale machines, and that most of its fruit is Australian, from Queensland. Each batch gets what it calls its signature wave decoration on top.

The Torquay store page doesn't say where its gelato is made. When the Geelong stores opened, Forte Magazine reported it was handmade fresh each day in Essendon.

The permanent gelato flavours and the cakes are halal certified. On gluten, the store page says there are gluten-free options and the chain says many flavours have no gluten ingredients, but it won't guarantee anything is free of traces. If you're coeliac, ask the staff and check the allergen guide.

Hours and prices

The Torquay store page showed these hours when we checked in October 2026:

  • Monday to Thursday: 2pm to 9pm
  • Friday and Saturday: 1pm to 9.30pm
  • Sunday: 1pm to 9pm

It's closed on Christmas Day and open on Boxing Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. It doesn't open in the morning, so it's an afternoon and after-dinner stop. That late finish is the main reason we'd send you here, after fish and chips on the foreshore.

Augustus doesn't publish scoop prices online, so we can't give you a figure. The phone number is 0473 945 269. You can also order through Uber Eats. The Augustus Rewards app gives a point per dollar and a free double scoop in your birthday month.

Nearby

Gilbert Street makes an easy evening loop. Captain's Catch at 34 Gilbert Street does the fish and chips, Fisho's is just around the corner at 36 The Esplanade if you'd rather sit down, and Torquay Wine Store at 19A Gilbert Street has a glass for the grown-ups. Then take your cone across to the Front Beach lawns.

For ice cream made by a local business, Nordenfine is on Bell Street, and The Chocolateries is out on the Great Ocean Road at Bellbrae.
