Same great Chocolaterie, with a new name

The Chocolateries Great Ocean Road is at 1200 Great Ocean Road, Bellbrae, on the corner of Elkington Road. Plenty of people still call it the Chocolaterie. Until 2026 it was the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery, and the business refreshed its brand that year so all its sites share one name. It turned 10 in September 2026. Same team, same address, same phone number. Older signs and maps may still use the old name.

It opened in 2016 as the second site for the business behind the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery, set up by Ian and Leanne Neeland in 2012. There's a smaller one at Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula, and Bendigo is on the way.

It sits on about 15 acres of lawns and gardens at the Anglesea end of Bellbrae, about 20 minutes' drive from north Torquay. Entry is free.

The ice cream

The ice cream is made on site. The cabinet holds 24 flavours, churned fresh daily, with no preservatives or artificial flavours. Prices start at $6.75 for a generous single scoop in a cup or cone (October 2026).

What's in the cabinet

The classics are always there: vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, plus cookies and cream, salted caramel and a wildberry sorbet. The rest of the selection rotates often, and the chocolatiers are always crafting new flavour combinations, so it's worth a look at the board before you settle on vanilla.

Try before you choose

Tastings of the ice cream are free, which helps when the kids can't decide. The same goes for most of the chocolate (the truffles are the exception).

Dairy-free, vegan and gluten-friendly

There are dairy-friendly and gluten-friendly options in the cabinet, and the sorbets include vegan ones. Ingredient and allergen details are available for every ice cream. Everything's made where nuts, wheat and dairy are also handled.

Take some home

You can buy 475ml tubs to take away. If you're staying nearby, that's dessert sorted for the night.

The Ice Cream Festival

Every February there's an Ice Cream Festival, a celebration of ice cream with flavours inspired from far and wide. The dates and the line-up change each year, and they're announced on the What's on page.

Chocolate and classes

The showroom has more than 480 handmade chocolates, and you can watch the chocolatiers at work through the production windows. As you walk in there are three big bowls of milk, dark and white chocolate buttons to try.

Daily tasting sessions

A guided tasting of 12 chocolates runs at 10am, 11am, 1pm and 2pm every day. It's $4 a person, and you sign up with the showroom staff on the day.

Classes

Junior Chocolatier Classes are for 6 to 12-year-olds ($45 a child), in a parent-free room, on selected Saturday mornings and school holiday dates. Chocolate Discovery Classes are for adults and kids 13 and up ($55). Both are booked through the What's on page.

Seasonal events

There's something on through the year: Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, Bastille Day, Father's Day, Halloween and Christmas, plus the public and school holidays. The venue also runs its own Hot Chocolate, Rocky Road, Brownie and Ice Cream festivals. See the What's on page for what's coming up.

The café

The all-day café serves breakfast and lunch, desserts made by the pastry team, hot chocolate and the brownies the place is known for. There are more than 300 seats inside and out, and no bookings. There are vegan and gluten-friendly dishes on the menu.

High tea is the one thing to book: weekday high tea runs Monday to Friday in school terms at 11am and 2pm, and there's a seniors' version on Thursdays.

With kids and dogs

Kids can run around on the lawns and in the gardens, and there are guinea pigs, chickens and ducks to visit. You can eat anything you've bought there on the lawns or in the café, but you can't bring your own food. On a wet day the showroom and café make it one of the better indoor stops near town; our rainy day guide has more.

Dogs are welcome outside on a lead, including in the outdoor part of the café, where you order with a QR code. Keep them away from the ducks. For more dog-friendly spots, see our dog-friendly Torquay guide.

There are ramps, disabled parking and accessible toilets.

Hours and getting there

It's open every day from 9am to 5pm, public holidays included, and closed only on Christmas Day. Phone (03) 5263 1588.

From Torquay, take the Great Ocean Road towards Anglesea. It's past Bellbrae, at the corner of Elkington Road. It's about 17 km and 20 minutes from north Torquay, and there's a car park on site.

Bellbrae Estate is about 10 minutes back towards Torquay, and Anglesea is only a few minutes further on, so it fits well into an Anglesea day. Our family holiday guide has more ideas for the kids.
