The restaurant
HugSiam Thai is at 12-14 Pearl Street, in Torquay's town centre, about five minutes' drive from north Torquay. It's a sit-down restaurant as well as a takeaway, with about 50 seats and a full liquor licence. The Australian Good Food Guide describes a full glass frontage, wooden floors and traditional artwork, the kind of room where you'd linger over a glass of wine.
It won the Good Food Guide's Readers' Choice award for Thai in the Great Ocean Road region in 2023. It's also the Thai restaurant in town with the most interesting menu, going beyond the usual curries into northern Thai dishes and a whole collection of crispy pork belly.
What to order
Prices are from HugSiam's online ordering menu in October 2026.
Khao soi
The signature, and the reason to come. It's the northern Thai coconut curry noodle soup, with both soft and crispy noodles on top. At dinner it's $22.50 with chicken katsu or $23.50 with crispy pork belly, and at weekend lunch it's $19.50.
Crispy pork belly
The house-made crispy pork belly gets its own section: stir-fried with Thai basil or Chinese broccoli, in fried rice, pad thai and pad see ew, all $23.50.
Curries
The everyday curries (green, red, yellow, pineapple and a northern jungle curry without coconut milk) are $16.50, with panang and massaman at $17.50. The specials are a slow-cooked beef massaman or panang ($22.50) and a red curry of roast duck legs with lychee and pineapple ($27.50). The chef's favourite is the choo chee king prawns ($27.50), and there's a crispy barramundi in red curry too.
Noodles, rice and salads
Pad thai, pad see ew, Hokkien noodles and fried rice are $16.50. The salads include a larb (the family recipe, with chicken, beef or pork, $22.50), a nam tok of grilled beef, and a papaya salad with king prawns ($25.50).
To start
Spring rolls and curry puffs ($10.50 for four), fish cakes and wontons ($9.50), chicken satay ($11.50), and a tom yum with prawns ($15.50). The mixed entree, five pieces to share, is $13.50, and there's a vegetarian version. Mango sticky rice with coconut ice cream ($15.50) appears in season.
Weekend lunch
HugSiam opens for lunch from midday to 3pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The lunch boxes are good value: a stir-fry or curry with jasmine rice, a spring roll and a side for $15.50, or $18.50 with crispy pork belly. Cashew chicken, beef in oyster sauce, satay chicken, basil chicken, green curry and beef massaman are all on the list.
Hours, takeaway and delivery
Opening hours
Dinner from 4.30pm to 9pm every day, plus lunch from 12pm to 3pm Friday to Sunday, according to HugSiam's website. The website also advertises the lunch-box special from Wednesday to Sunday.
Ordering
Order through the link on HugSiam's website for pickup or delivery. Orders are confirmed by the restaurant, and you can pre-order even when it's closed, which is handy for an early dinner. It's on Uber Eats too, or ring (03) 5261 7111.
Kids and groups
The listing has it as child friendly, with functions as well. For little ones, satay chicken, fried rice and a mild massaman or yellow curry are safe.
Vegetarian
There's a vegetarian mixed entree of spring rolls, curry puffs and tofu, a vegetable tom yum, and Hug's Asian greens, a wok-fried mix of Chinese broccoli, tofu and green beans. The curries and stir-fries are cooked with fresh vegetables, so ask about a vegetable or tofu version.
