Torquay & Surf Coast Events 2026–27

A year of reasons to come down, month by month, with the drive from our front door

Planning around the calendar

A lot of people who stay with us come down for something. A surf contest at Bells, an ocean swim in Lorne, a bike race, a music festival on the Bellarine. Some just want to know what's on so they can avoid it. Fair enough.

This is our list of the events within about an hour of Torquay that are worth building a few days around, from November 2026 to October 2027. Every drive time is from Holyday House in north Torquay, on a normal day. On a big event day, add a lot.

One rule for the whole page: we only give exact dates where the organisers have announced them. Where they haven't, we say when it usually happens. Events move, get rained out or get cancelled for fire danger, so always check the official site before you lock anything in.

How busy Torquay gets

Events matter, but school holidays matter more. The summer break is the big one. From the week before Christmas to the end of January, Torquay's population swells, the Front Beach car parks fill by mid-morning and the bakery queue goes out the door. Easter is next, especially when the Rip Curl Pro lands on it. The winter and spring breaks are busy on weekends and a lot calmer midweek.

Long weekends fill up fast too, because Torquay is close enough to Melbourne for a Friday night drive down. If your dates touch a long weekend or the summer holidays, book early. Minimum stays at Holyday House are 2, 3 or 4 nights depending on the dates.

School dates are Victorian government school terms from vic.gov.au. Public holidays are from Business Victoria. Private schools can differ by a few days.

November and December 2026

Late spring. Warmer days, cold water, and the wind can be rude. It's still school term, so midweek Torquay is quiet until the holidays start on 19 December.

Great Ocean Road Womens Surf Fest, Lorne

7 and 8 November 2026, according to Surf Coast Shire's events calendar. A weekend of contests, lessons and coaching for women and girls on Lorne's main beach, run with Surfing Victoria, plus a market on the foreshore. About 45 minutes' drive. Check the Surf Coast events calendar for the program.

Queenscliff Music Festival

Friday 27 to Sunday 29 November 2026. A long-running, friendly music festival spread across Queenscliff, from the main site to the town hall and the pub. Tickets are sold through the Queenscliff Music Festival site. Allow 45 minutes to an hour to drive across, or look at the festival buses so nobody has to stay sober.

Torquay Triathlon Super Sprint

Sunday 29 November 2026, early morning on The Esplanade. A short swim, ride and run, with a kids' race too. It's right in town, a few minutes from the house. If you're not racing, just know the Esplanade has road closures until mid-morning.

Bells Beach Longboard Classic

2 to 6 December 2026 on the World Surf League's longboard tour schedule (it was first announced for late November, so check it hasn't moved again). The world's best longboarders at Bells, free to watch from the cliffs, and much quieter than Easter. Ten minutes' drive. Details on the WSL Longboard Tour page.

Afterglow Night Trail Runs, Torquay

Saturday 5 December 2026. Evening trail runs of 21 km, 13 km and 5 km on the Surf Coast Walk, finishing at Fishermans Beach in Torquay, with glow sticks and lights after dark. Entry prices go up closer to the day, so enter early on the Afterglow site. About five minutes from the house.

Carols by the Barwon, Winchelsea

Saturday 5 December 2026, 5pm to 8.30pm in Lions Park on Winchelsea's Main Street. A country-town carols night by the river. Details on the Surf Coast events page. About 40 minutes' drive.

Christmas week

Not an event as such, but it's when the summer crowds land. Our Christmas and New Year in Torquay guide covers trading hours, patrolled beaches and fire danger days.

Anglesea Roo Run

Sunday 27 December 2026 at Point Roadknight, Anglesea. An 8 km run, a 4 km run and a Grommets Gallop for the kids, with walkers welcome. Register on the Roo Run website. About 25 minutes' drive.

Rock2Ramp Ocean Swim, Anglesea

Monday 28 December 2026 at Point Roadknight Beach, run by Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club. The swims include a 1.2 km course, and there's a combined Surf'n'Turf result if you also do the Roo Run the day before. Entries on the Rock2Ramp website; the early-entry price ends on 14 December. About 25 minutes' drive.

Rip View Swim Classic, Point Lonsdale

Wednesday 30 December 2026, the 38th edition, off Point Lonsdale's front beach with the Heads and the Rip in view. Swims of 600 m, 1.4 km and 3.8 km, and registrations open on 31 October. See the Rip View website. About 40 minutes' drive.

January 2027

The busiest month of the year, and the most packed calendar. Two big weekends stand out: Lorne's swim and run on 8 and 9 January, and the bike race week at the end of the month.

Danger Ocean Swim Series, Torquay

Saturday 2 January 2027, from 8am at Point Danger. Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club's ocean swims off Torquay's Front Beach, including a short Danger Dash that you can enter on the day. Details and entries on the club's website. About five minutes from the house.

Lorne Mountain to Surf

Friday 8 January 2027. An 8 km run or walk from Lorne, up into the Otway forest and back down to the surf club. Entries open Monday 2 November 2026 through the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club. Worth knowing: the 2026 run was cancelled because of fire danger and a national park closure, so it can happen.

Lorne Pier to Pub

Saturday 9 January 2027. A 1.2 km swim from Lorne Pier to the surf club, with thousands in the water and a lot more on the sand. Entries open 2 November and go fast. Lorne is about 45 minutes away on a normal day, but on Pier to Pub morning the Great Ocean Road is slow and parking is scarce, so leave early. Our Pier to Pub guide has the details, and entries are on the Lorne SLSC site.

Portarlington Mussel Festival

Adults are $10, under-16s free, per the festival site (check before you go). No dogs, apart from service dogs. It's 45 minutes to an hour from Torquay, and it's the same day as Pier to Pub, so pick one.

Vic Open golf, 13th Beach

Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 January 2027 at 13th Beach Golf Links near Barwon Heads. The men's and women's Vic Open are played at the same time on the same courses, for equal prize money. See Golf Australia for tickets. About 20 minutes' drive.

Festival of Sails, Geelong

Saturday 23 to Tuesday 26 January 2027, over the Australia Day long weekend. A big keelboat regatta on Corio Bay that opens with the Melbourne to Geelong Passage Race, plus three nights of entertainment and stalls on the waterfront. The waterfront side is free. About half an hour's drive. Festival of Sails 2027.

Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race week

The women's Surf Coast Classic is Wednesday 27 January and the men's is Thursday 28 January, both racing from Lorne to a finish in Torquay. The GeelongPort Family Ride is Friday 29, the TAC People's Ride and the women's road race are Saturday 30, and the men's road race is Sunday 31 January. Roads close on race days. Our Cadel Evans race guide covers where to watch, and the official race site has routes once they're out.

February and March 2027

Kids are back at school, the water's at its warmest and the town quietens down midweek. For a lot of locals, this is the good bit. Then Easter arrives and it all fills up again.

Geelong Beer Festival

Saturday 6 February 2027, from midday at Johnstone Park in central Geelong. Forty-plus drink and food stalls with live music all day, an easy walk from Geelong station. Tickets on the festival website. About 25 minutes' drive, but it's one to get a lift to.

Bellarine Sunset Run

Saturday 13 February 2027, finishing at Portarlington pier, with a half marathon, a 10 km and a 4 km run as the sun goes down. If the weather's bad it moves to the Sunday morning. See the Sunset Run website. About 50 minutes' drive.

Torquay Rotary Motor Show

Sunday 14 February 2027 on the Torquay foreshore. A car show by the beach, run by the Rotary Club of Torquay, with a people's choice award. Details on the motor show website. About five minutes from the house.

Barwon Heads Triathlon

Sunday 21 February 2027, from 8.30am: a 400 m swim, 14 km ride and 4 km run around Barwon Heads, one of the prettiest courses in the state. Entries on the Barwon Heads Tri website. About 20 minutes' drive.

Avalon Airshow

23 to 28 February 2027 at Avalon Airport. The first days are for trade, and the public program runs from Friday 26 February (with a Friday night show) to Sunday 28. It's ticketed through the official airshow site. Avalon is about 45 minutes from the house, but traffic on public days is heavy, so leave very early. More in our Avalon Airshow 2027 guide.

Pako Festa, Geelong West

Saturday 27 February 2027, with the street parade at 11am. Geelong's big free multicultural street party on Pakington Street, with food from everywhere and music stages. About half an hour away. Same weekend as the airshow, so expect Geelong to be busy. Pako Festa.

Otway Odyssey, Forrest

On 27 and 28 February 2027. A long-running mountain bike marathon and gravel ride in the Otways, about an hour's drive inland, and entries are open. Our mountain biking guide covers the Forrest trails.

Lorne Sculpture Biennale

Usually March, every second year. Big outdoor sculptures along the Lorne foreshore, free to wander. There's a 2027 edition planned, but exact dates hadn't been announced when we checked. An easy add-on to a Lorne day, about 45 minutes away.

Bellarine Agricultural Show, Portarlington

Sunday 7 March 2027. A proper country show, with animals, produce and local competitions; the 2027 program is still being put together. See the show website. About 50 minutes' drive.

IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong

Listed for Sunday 21 March 2027 on the Geelong waterfront, starting and finishing at Steampacket Gardens. A half-distance triathlon with a swim in Corio Bay. Free to watch along the run course. IRONMAN's own event pages confirm the date. About half an hour's drive.

Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach

Surfing Victoria lists the 2027 event for 25 March to 4 April, right across Easter. The World Surf League hadn't published its 2027 tour schedule when we checked, so treat those dates as close to final but not locked. It's a waiting period: competition runs on the days with the best surf, and the call is made each morning. Before it, the Victorian Rip Curl Pro Trials are at Bells on Sunday 21 March. Bells is 10 minutes from the house. Our Rip Curl Pro guide covers parking, the walk in from Jan Juc, and booking. Surfing Victoria's Rip Curl Pro page.

April to August 2027

After Easter the calendar thins out. Autumn's a lovely time to be here anyway, and winter is fires, big swells and a quieter town. A few events are worth knowing about.

Great Ocean & Otway Classic Ride, Torquay

Saturday 24 April 2027. A recreational ride of 60 km, 145 km or 204 km from Elephant Walk Reserve in Torquay, along the Great Ocean Road and through the Otways, with a jersey included in the entry. Prices rise in steps closer to the day; see the ride's website. About five minutes from the house.

Great Ocean Road Running Festival

Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 May 2027. The marathon and the 60 km ultra run along the closed Great Ocean Road towards Apollo Bay, with shorter runs, a 5 km walk and a 1.5 km kids' race too. Lorne is about 45 minutes away and Apollo Bay about 1 hour 50, so staying in Torquay works best for the Lorne end, or for supporters who don't mind an early start. Check the running festival site for start points and road closures.

Surf Coast Trail Marathon

Saturday 26 June 2027, the first day of the winter school holidays. A point-to-point trail run along the Surf Coast Walk from Torquay to the Fairhaven surf club, with a half marathon and an 8 km option. The marathon starts in Torquay, which is handy. Fairhaven is about half an hour's drive back. Surf Coast Trail Marathon. Our Surf Coast Walk guide has the route in sections.

Winter whales

Nobody organises these, which is the nice thing. Our whale watching guide covers when and where to look.

September and October 2027

Spring brings the endurance crowd back to the coast, along with the wildflowers. The spring school holidays start on 18 September.

Amy's Great Ocean Road Gran Fondo

Sunday 12 September 2027. A big mass-participation ride on the closed Great Ocean Road, starting in Lorne, with shorter options too. Roads around Lorne close for the morning. About 45 minutes away. Amy's Gran Fondo.

Surf Coast Century, Anglesea

Saturday 18 September 2027. A 100 km or 50 km trail ultra, solo or in relay teams, based in Anglesea, plus a short kids' run. Anglesea is about 20 minutes away, so supporters can duck home between checkpoints. Surf Coast Century.

Angair Wildflower Weekend, Anglesea

In 2026 it was the weekend of 19 and 20 September. Native orchid and wildflower displays, guided walks, plant sales and an art show. 2027 dates weren't out when we checked, but September is a fair bet. Watch the Angair site.

Every weekend in Torquay

Torquay Farmers Market

Every Saturday, 8:30am to 1pm, according to the Surf Coast events calendar. Times can change, so check before you go.

Torquay parkrun

Every Saturday at 8am. A free, timed 5 km. Register with parkrun before you come and bring your barcode.

Torquay Cowrie Market

The third Sunday of the month, September to April. Our markets guide has the rest.

New Year's Eve fireworks

It's a common question. The short answer: don't count on fireworks in Torquay. Surf Coast Shire stopped funding the Torquay display in 2019, and stopped running Lorne's in 2022.

Lorne hasn't gone dark, though. The Committee for Lorne has raised money from the community to run shows off Lorne Pier in recent years, at 9:30pm and midnight for New Year's Eve 2025. Whether it happens again depends on the fundraising, so check the local news in December.

The other options are on Corio Bay. For New Year's Eve 2025, the City of Greater Geelong ran free waterfront fireworks at 9:30pm and midnight, Portarlington had a 9:30pm family display, and Queenscliff Harbour ran a ticketed party with fireworks. The 2026 programs weren't out when we checked. Geelong is about half an hour's drive, Portarlington and Queenscliff 45 minutes to an hour, and somebody has to drive home. Or skip the lot and see the new year in from the hot tub.

On a break, or gone

Geelong Revival

Not on in 2026. The classic car and motorbike festival on the Geelong waterfront, usually the last weekend of November, was cancelled this year: in September the organisers cited rising costs and less funding, and talked of a possible return in 2027 as a biennial event. Watch the Geelong Revival site for news.

Apollo Bay Seafood Festival

Taking a break. The organisers say it'll come back when the timing's right, and there's no 2027 date. Apollo Bay's still worth the drive for a feed of fish and chips by the harbour.

Falls Festival, Lorne

The last full Falls in Lorne was in 2018. The 2019 festival was called off partway through because of extreme fire risk, and the old site was sold in 2025. There's no Falls in Lorne this New Year, and no sign of it coming back.

Staying for an event

Most of these events pull in a crowd, and accommodation near them goes early. Lorne in Pier to Pub week is a good example. Staying in Torquay and driving in is often the easier option, as long as you leave early on the day.

Holyday House is ours, in north Torquay. It sleeps 8 in four bedrooms, which suits a relay team, a swim squad or two families splitting the driving. There's off-street parking for several cars plus room for a boat or trailer, covered storage for boards and wetsuits, and a private hot tub for legs that have just done 42 km. Dogs are welcome within reason (get in touch first), though most events are no place for them, and the backyard is fully fenced.

Surf Coast events FAQ

When is the Rip Curl Pro in 2027?

Surfing Victoria lists 25 March to 4 April 2027, which covers Easter. The World Surf League hadn't released its 2027 schedule when we checked, so confirm closer to the time. It's a waiting period, so contest days are called each morning depending on the surf.

Are there New Year's Eve fireworks in Torquay?

We can't promise any. Council stopped funding them in 2019. Lorne has had community-funded fireworks off the pier in recent years, and Geelong's waterfront has had free displays at 9:30pm and midnight. Check the 2026 plans in December.

What's the busiest time in Torquay?

The summer school holidays, from 19 December 2026 to 27 January 2027, with the peak between Christmas and Australia Day. Easter is next, especially with the Rip Curl Pro on. Long weekends book out early too.

Which events are in Torquay itself?

The Torquay Triathlon on 29 November 2026, the finish of both Surf Coast Classic bike races on 27 and 28 January 2027, and the start of the Surf Coast Trail Marathon on 26 June 2027. Bells Beach, 10 minutes away, has the Longboard Classic and the Rip Curl Pro.

Is Falls Festival still on in Lorne?

No. The last full Lorne festival was in 2018 (2019's was cut short by extreme fire risk), and the site was sold in 2025. Nothing has been announced for Lorne this New Year.

Can I bring the dog to these events?

It depends on the event, and most don't say. The Portarlington Mussel Festival says no dogs. Crowds, road closures and fireworks are hard on dogs anyway, so plan who's minding them on the day. Just remember our house rule: dogs are never left alone inside the house.

Still picking a season? Our best time to visit Torquay guide runs through the weather and water month by month. For the big ones, see the Rip Curl Pro guide, the Pier to Pub guide and our Christmas and New Year guide. Know your event? Check dates and send us an enquiry. We reply within 24 hours.
