Bring the bikes

If the kids ride, pack the bikes. There are three free bike parks within about half an hour of north Torquay, a professionally built one at Anglesea, a big new ride centre at Ocean Grove that opened in August 2026, and a skills park in Geelong. None of them charge, none have set opening hours (though The Hill is closed at night and in bad weather), and all are run by the local councils or volunteer committees.

This guide is about the parks: jumps, pump tracks and BMX tracks. For trail riding in the bush, from Anglesea's Eumeralla trails to Forrest and the You Yangs, see our mountain biking guide.

One rule applies everywhere: don't ride when it's wet. The Surf Coast Shire closes its bike parks in the rain, and riding soft dirt wrecks the jumps the volunteers have built. Wear a helmet, and give way to the people already on a line.

In Torquay and Jan Juc

Spring Valley Bike Park, Torquay

The closest, at 84A Spring Valley Drive beside Spring Creek Reserve, on the west side of town. It's a dirt jump park with beginner, intermediate and advanced jump runs, and a small gravel pump track for beginners. Riders say the jump from the intermediate line to the advanced one is a big step, so let the kids work up to it. There's a playground and walking trails in the park. Surf Coast Shire runs it, and it's free.

Bob Pettitt Bike Park, Jan Juc

At Bob Pettitt Reserve on Sunset Strip, Jan Juc. The council rebuilt and roughly doubled it in 2023, working with young local riders, the Surf Coast MTB Club and the Anglesea Bike Park Committee. There are three jump lines for riders of all ages, and the reserve also has a skate park, a playground, a shelter and barbecues, so the whole family has something to do.

Kalkarra BMX and pump track, Mount Duneed

In Kalkarra Park on Kalkarra Crescent, about ten minutes north. A BMX track with small jumps and berms for beginners and intermediate riders, and a pump track beside it. With a junior playground and a shared path next to it, it's the gentlest of the three and the best for younger kids.

Worth the drive

Anglesea Bike Park

The original, built in 2006 at 80 Camp Road, Anglesea, and designed by Glen Jacobs of World Trail. It was Victoria's first professionally designed 4X track: about 400 metres of straights, switchbacks, rollers and table-tops from 20 centimetres to 1.8 metres high. There's also a dirt jump area and a skills course with log rides, under tall pines for shade, with a toilet, shelter and parking. About 25 minutes away.

Ocean Grove District Ride Centre

The big new one, opened on 1 August 2026 at Kingston Park, Ocean Grove. Built by World Trail for $3.5 million, it has five jump lines from beginner to advanced and an asphalt pump track that scooters and skateboards can use too. The council says it's for everyone from first-time balance bikes up. About 35 minutes away, via Barwon Heads.

The Hill, Geelong

A four-hectare mountain bike park in Newtown, on the corner of Fyans Street and Shannon Avenue, and the only dedicated mountain bike park in Greater Geelong outside the You Yangs. It has cross-country loops, a skills track, a pump track and jump lines graded beginner to advanced. Pair it with a ride along the Barwon River.

Forrest pump tracks and skills park

At the Forrest mountain bike trailhead in the Otways, about an hour and a quarter away. The 2023 upgrade added an asphalt pump track, a skills park with rollers, jumps and banked turns, two jump lines, and a second, smaller pump track built for young children and adaptive riders. Make a day of it with the trails; our mountain biking guide and Forrest Brewing have the rest.

For little kids

There's no learn-to-ride traffic school on the Surf Coast. For balance bikes and first pedals, the smooth asphalt pump tracks at Ocean Grove and Forrest are the best bets, and Kalkarra's small BMX track is gentle enough for a first go at a jump. Closer to home, the foreshore path along Front Beach is mostly flat, which suits a slow ride with training wheels.

Rides on shared paths

Torquay foreshore and the Surf Coast Walk

Bikes are allowed on the shared sections of the Surf Coast Walk, including the foreshore path from Fishermans Beach to Point Danger. Our Surf Coast Walk guide has the details.

Bellarine Rail Trail

About 35 kilometres from South Geelong to Queenscliff on the old railway line, sealed to Drysdale and compacted gravel after that. The eastern end runs beside the Bellarine Railway's tourist trains.

Barwon River, Geelong

A mostly sealed shared path follows the river between Fyansford and South Geelong, with loops you can make as short or long as you like. It passes close to The Hill, so you can do both.
