The bike park on Camp Road

Anglesea Bike Park is at 80 Camp Road, Anglesea, about a kilometre from the shops and the river. It's on a hillside opposite Anglesea Primary School, with tall pines all round and parking on site. It's free.

Its claim to fame is the mountain cross (or 4X) track, which the park and Surf Coast Shire both describe as the first professionally designed one in Victoria. There's also a dirt jump area, a skills course with log rides and a trials section, so a family with a mix of ages and nerve can all find something.

It's about 25 minutes' drive from north Torquay, straight down the Great Ocean Road, which makes it an easy morning out or a stop on the way to Aireys Inlet or Lorne.

What's there

The 4X track

About 400 metres of straights and switchbacks down the natural slope of the hill. The features are mounds, rollers, jumps and table-tops, and the park's website puts them anywhere from 200 mm to 1800 mm high. The park says the features were chosen so riders of every skill level can ride it safely. Trailhead Bike Co. in Anglesea says the track was extended and reworked in 2011 to make it longer, quicker and harder.

The dirt jumps

The Surf Coast Mountain Bike Club lists two jump tracks. Trailhead rates the dirt jump course double black, for experienced jumpers only. This is the bit to watch from the side if you're not sure.

Skills course, log rides and trials

A short cross-country loop and singletrack with log rides, plus a trials area for riders who like hopping over obstacles without putting a foot down.

Trails from the park

The club says you can ride from the bike park into the Eumeralla network, about 30 km of signed cross-country trail. There are also unsanctioned, mostly downhill trails reached from the park. They're on Trailforks and Strava, but they aren't maintained, so ride them at your own risk. Our mountain biking guide has more on Eumeralla.

Who it suits

The council and the park both say it's for riders of all ages and levels, and that's fair for the 4X track and the skills course. Kids on a mountain bike or BMX who can stand up on the pedals will be fine on the 4X and the log rides at their own pace. Teenagers who've done a bit of jumping will get the most out of it. The dirt jumps are a different story, so keep beginners off them.

It's all dirt, so balance bikes and scooters won't get much out of it. For little ones on scooters, the asphalt pump track at the Ocean Grove District Ride Centre is a better bet. For a cross-country and skills mix closer to Geelong, try The Hill Mountain Bike Park.

How it came about

The park was built in September 2006, after years of lobbying by local riders and the Anglesea community. It went in on Alcoa freehold land on Camp Road after the town's BMX track closed. Alcoa funded the design and construction of the 4X track and leased the hectare of land to Surf Coast Shire at no cost.

The designer and builder was Glen Jacobs of World Trail, which has since built trails around the world and, much more recently, the Ocean Grove ride centre.

A volunteer committee of local riders looks after it with the council's support and holds working bees. When Alcoa moved to sell its Anglesea land, the bike park's future was in doubt, and in late 2017 more than 5000 people signed a petition to keep it. It's still running on Camp Road.

Facilities and the wet-weather rule

There's a toilet, a shelter and a picnic area, and the pines keep it shady, which matters in January. Parking is on site. We didn't find drinking water listed, so bring bottles.

The one rule that really matters: the park is closed when it's raining or heavy rain is forecast, and it reopens once the track is dry. Riding wet dirt wrecks the shapes the volunteers have spent hours on. No opening hours are published, and Visit Great Ocean Road lists it as open daily. If you're not sure whether it's open after a wet spell, call Surf Coast Shire on 03 5261 0600 (8.30am to 5pm weekdays) before you go.

Getting there and nearby

From north Torquay, take Grossmans Road west to Bellbrae, turn left onto Anglesea Road, then right onto the Great Ocean Road at the roundabout. In Anglesea, turn right into Betleigh Street, then right into Camp Road. It's about 21 km. The shire also has jump parks in Torquay and Jan Juc, closer to home, and our bike parks guide compares them.

Afterwards, head down to the river. Coogoorah Park has the pirate-ship playground and barbecues, and the main beach, patrolled in summer, is next to the river mouth. Anglesea Golf Club runs kangaroo tours out among the mob on its fairways. Our Anglesea day trip guide covers all of it, and there's more on the course in our Anglesea Golf Club guide. Trailhead Bike Co., on the Great Ocean Road in town, is the local bike shop if something breaks.
