Spacious living room with wood fire at Holyday House, wedding accommodation in Torquay

Wedding Accommodation in Torquay

Somewhere calm to get ready, and somewhere comfy to come home to

Staying together for a Surf Coast wedding

Lots of Victorians come down the Surf Coast to get married. You've got resort function rooms looking at the coast, vineyard lawns, gardens out in the hinterland behind Bellbrae and clifftop spots along the Great Ocean Road. There's a catch for guests, though. On a busy wedding weekend the hotel rooms near the venue can go fast, and your lot can end up spread all over town.

Book a whole house and everyone stays together. Holyday House is a single-level, four-bedroom home in Torquay that sleeps up to 8 guests, with 3 bathrooms, two separate living rooms and a full kitchen. It works for a bridal party wanting a calm spot on the morning of the wedding. It works for a family coming in for the weekend, too, and for a bunch of friends who'd rather share a house than book four hotel rooms.

Below: how the house works for wedding guests, the main venues nearby and how far away they are, and the practical stuff about a wedding weekend on the coast. That means getting home after the reception, minimum stays and booking early.

Who sleeps where

With four bedrooms, you've got some room to move. Two are master bedrooms with their own ensuites, so they're the obvious ones for the couple and a set of parents, or for two couples sharing.

Master Bedroom 1

1 queen bed, ensuite. Sleeps up to 2

Master Bedroom 2

1 queen bed, 1 floor mattress, 1 cot, ensuite. Sleeps up to 3

Bedroom 3

1 queen bed. Sleeps up to 2

Bedroom 4

2 single beds, 1 floor mattress. Sleeps up to 3

The house takes 8 guests at most. The floor mattresses help with kids but don't raise that limit. Bringing a baby? There's a cot in Master Bedroom 2, and a highchair. Our group accommodation guide has more on splitting rooms fairly between two families or a group of mates.

Getting ready on the morning

Wedding mornings come down to bathrooms and space. There are three bathrooms (two of them ensuites), so nobody's queuing for the shower. And with two living rooms, hair and make-up can take over one while everyone else has brekkie in the other.

✓ Two living rooms. Room for garment bags, flowers and a hair-and-make-up setup without them taking over the whole house.
✓ Iron, hair dryer and laundry. For last-minute pressing. There's also a washing machine, dryer and drying rack for the morning after.
✓ A full kitchen. Cook a proper breakfast before a long day, keep the drinks cold, and do a recovery brunch the next morning. There's a coffee maker, a dishwasher and a dining table that seats eight.
✓ Split-system A/C and heating. Comfy whatever the Surf Coast weather does. On cooler evenings there are three wood fires, one in each living room and one in the covered outdoor lounge.
✓ Self check-in and free parking. There's a smart lock, so no key handover to plan around when people turn up at different times.
✓ A private hot tub. Open year-round and fenced separately in the backyard. Good for your feet after a night of dancing in heels.

One thing to be clear on. Holyday House is somewhere to stay, not a venue. The house rules don't allow parties or events, and commercial photography isn't allowed either. If you're hoping for getting-ready photos at the house, or want a few people over before the ceremony, say so when you enquire and Steve and Karen can tell you what's possible.

Wedding venues near Torquay

Holyday House is in north Torquay, near Whites Beach. Here are some of the established wedding venues that are an easy drive away. Drive times are rough and depend on traffic, so allow extra on summer weekends.

Venue Area Drive from the house
RACV Torquay Resort Torquay about 10 min
Bellbrae Harvest Bellbrae about 15 min
Mt Duneed Estate Mount Duneed about 15 min
Great Ocean Road Resort Anglesea about 25 min
Jack Rabbit Vineyard Bellarine about 40 min

RACV Torquay Resort

On the Great Ocean Road at the southern edge of Torquay, with a ballroom, function rooms and terraces, some looking at the coast. It's the closest big venue to the house, near enough that a quick taxi home is realistic.

Bellbrae Harvest

A country property in the Bellbrae hinterland, just in from the coast between Torquay and Anglesea. Ceremonies happen by the pond, receptions among the vines and gardens. There are a few cellar doors in Bellbrae too. Our wineries guide has them.

Mt Duneed Estate

A big winery estate between Torquay and Geelong, with several indoor and outdoor ceremony spaces and room for weddings of around 50 to 500 guests. Good for bigger weddings, and it's an easy drive back to the coast.

Great Ocean Road Resort, Anglesea

A smaller resort venue in Anglesea that suits small weddings. The beach and clifftop spots nearby often get used for ceremonies.

Jack Rabbit Vineyard

A vineyard restaurant on the Bellarine Peninsula that does functions, looking out over Port Phillip Bay. Ask the venue about weddings. It's further away, but Torquay still makes sense as a base if your group wants a beach day either side of the wedding.

Thinking of a beach or foreshore ceremony instead? Most Surf Coast beaches are looked after by the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority or by Parks Victoria, not the council, and you need a permit to marry on land they manage. Apply to them directly, and well before the date.

Getting to and from the reception

This is the bit that catches people out. The Surf Coast isn't the city. There are only so many taxis, rideshare can be hard to find late at night, and everyone leaves the venue at once. Sort out the trip home before you head off to the ceremony.

✓ Ask about a shuttle. Plenty of couples put on a bus between the venue and town. If there's one, find out where it stops in Torquay and when the last run leaves.
✓ Pre-book a taxi. Book a set pick-up time ahead instead of ringing on the night, and keep a second operator's number handy just in case. The Surf Coast Shire website lists local taxi services.
✓ Nominate a driver. There's free parking at the house, so one sober driver for the group is often the easiest fix. Especially for venues 15 minutes or more away.
✓ Allow for country roads. You get to the hinterland venues on unlit country roads, and there are plenty of kangaroos about at night. Drive slowly after dark.

Making a weekend of it

Most wedding guests come a fair way to get to the coast, so you may as well stay long enough to enjoy it. The minimum stay at Holyday House is two, three or four nights depending on the dates. On some weekends that means arriving Thursday or staying on till Monday anyway.

The day before, walk the 400m to Whites Beach, follow the Surf Coast Walk into town, or book a long lunch at a Bellbrae cellar door. The day after, have a slow brunch at the house and then a drive to Bells Beach or along the Great Ocean Road. It helps with the recovery. Our restaurants guide has ideas for a group dinner the night before.

Book as early as you can. Spring and summer Saturdays are the big wedding dates, and they often clash with school holidays and events. As soon as the couple locks in the date, send an enquiry with the number of guests and the venue. Steve and Karen can tell you straight away if the dates are free and what the minimum stay is.

Wedding Accommodation FAQ

How many wedding guests can stay at Holyday House?

Up to 8 guests across 4 bedrooms: three queen bedrooms (two with ensuites) and a fourth room with two single beds. Floor mattresses add flexibility for children but don't raise the limit of 8.

Can the bridal party get ready at the house?

Yes. Guests staying at the house are welcome to get ready there. With three bathrooms and two living rooms, the morning's a lot easier. The house rules don't allow parties, events or commercial photography, so ask Steve and Karen first if you're planning extra visitors or a photographer.

Can we hold the wedding or reception at the house?

No. Holyday House is accommodation, not an event venue, and parties aren't permitted. The venues listed above are all within about 40 minutes.

How far is the house from RACV Torquay Resort?

About 10 minutes by car. Bellbrae Harvest and Mt Duneed Estate are each about 15 minutes, and Great Ocean Road Resort in Anglesea is about 25 minutes.

How do we get home after the reception?

Plan it ahead. Taxis and rideshare can be hard to get late at night in a small coastal town. Use the couple's shuttle if there is one, pre-book a taxi for a set time, or pick a driver. There's free parking at the house.

What's the minimum stay?

It depends on the dates: two, three or four nights. Pick your dates in the booking form and the hosts will confirm.
