What it is
Ghanda is a surf and streetwear label that started in Torquay. It's best known for its hand-printed fleece trackpants, hoodies and crews, and for T-shirts with designs drawn by its own team. The prices are aimed at everyday basics rather than big-brand surfwear, and there's clothing for women, men, teens and kids.
It's grown to more than 20 stores around Australia, from Victoria to as far north as Townsville, but this is where it began. Torquay has three Ghanda shops: the flagship on Gilbert Street, a store on the Surf Coast Highway opposite Surf City Plaza, and an outlet on Baines Crescent.
From a market stall
Josh Rudd started Ghanda in 2003, selling clothes out of the back of his car at markets in Torquay. He'd see which T-shirts sold, go back at night and print more of exactly those, and sell them again. That habit of printing what people actually buy is still how the brand works.
Most of Ghanda's range is still hand-printed by its own in-house printers rather than overseas. In 2014, Forte Magazine reported that Ghanda was one of only two clothing screen printers left in Victoria printing their own stock, down from 14, and that the in-house printing supported around 25 jobs at the warehouse. Printing to order means fewer unsold styles and less waste, which the brand says is the point.
What to look for
Trackies
The hand-printed fleece trackpants are the signature, in several cuts: Original, Tracksides, Track & Fields, Sport and skinny joggers.
Hoodies and crews
Fleece hoodies and crew necks to match, which make sense on a cold Surf Coast evening.
Tees
The T-shirts are among the best-sellers, with prints by the in-house designers.
The rest
Dresses, playsuits, skirts, shorts, jackets and knits, plus beanies, hats, sunglasses, belts and some footwear.
The three Torquay stores
Ghanda's own store finder lists three shops in town:
- Ghanda Torquay Flagship, 2 Gilbert Street, (03) 4226 8990
- Ghanda Torquay, 2/118 Surf Coast Highway, across the road from Surf City Plaza, (03) 5215 3660
- Ghanda Torquay Outlet, 7A Baines Crescent, among the factory outlets, (03) 4226 8050
The outlet is the place for end-of-line stock at lower prices. All three are open seven days, and hours differ between them, so check the Ghanda store finder before you go. You can also buy online, and there are gift cards that work in store and online.
A Baines Crescent morning
The Ghanda outlet is one of a handful of outlets on the crescent, so it's easy to do them all in a morning. Start at the Rip Curl outlet if anyone needs a wetsuit, then the Quiksilver outlet at number 16 for boardshorts and rash vests, and Reef at number 18 for thongs and sandals. Finish at the Ghanda outlet for a hoodie for the evenings, because even summer nights on the Surf Coast can turn cool.
It's a good wet-weather plan, too. Everything's within a few minutes' walk, the surfing museum is in the Surf City precinct, and there's lunch at the Taphouse when you're done.
Getting there and what's nearby
Baines Crescent is behind Surf City Plaza on the Surf Coast Highway, about five minutes' drive from north Torquay. Park once and walk the crescent: the Rip Curl and Quiksilver outlets are a short walk away, and so are two breweries, the Torquay Taphouse and Bells Beach Brewing.
Ghanda started at the markets, and Torquay still has a farmers market every Saturday and a monthly makers' market on the foreshore in the warmer months. Our markets guide has the dates.
