The course

This is the course at 1 Great Ocean Road, at the southern end of Torquay where the town runs into Jan Juc. It's an 18-hole, par-71 links-style course, owned and run by RACV as part of the RACV Torquay Resort. The members' club that plays there is still called Torquay Golf Club, and that's the name you'll see on the booking site.

The course was redeveloped by Ogilvy Clayton, the design firm of Geoff Ogilvy (the former US Open champion) and Mike Clayton. Golf Australia magazine dates the redesign to 2013. RACV describes it as a traditional links-style course with wide couch fairways, wetlands and ocean views, and the club adds fescue roughs and views over the Torquay and Jan Juc shorelines.

There are four sets of tees. On the club's figures the green tees measure 4,864 metres, the yellows 5,145 metres and the whites 5,670 metres. The black tees, at 5,804 metres, are only played some of the time. It's par 71 for men off every tee. The women's par is higher (73 off most tees), so check the scorecard on the club's site.

A bit of history

Torquay Golf Club started in October 1920, on a nine-hole course on crown land that's now mostly the Foreshore Caravan Park. In 1924 it moved to a new nine holes either side of Spring Creek, on land leased from Alfred White. White later agreed to sell that land for 500 pounds, never asked for the money, and in effect gave it to the club.

The course went to 18 holes, then a par 70, in October 1952, after five members bought land to the west and passed half of it on to the club well below its value. The clubhouse that opened in 1959 was the dining room used by athletes at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, which the club bought and moved here. RACV bought the club and its facilities in October 2008, put millions into the course and built the resort.

What it's like to play

Golf Australia magazine's 2022 description is a good guide. It says the firm conditions and the near-constant coastal wind suit a links-style ground game, and that the design leans into that. The bunkers are fairly small, but the ground around many of them is shaped to feed your ball in. The greens have subtle slopes and will take a running shot, especially from the right side of the fairway.

Water's part of it too. Four holes on the front nine play around a big salt marsh, which the magazine says was built to help drainage and improve the look of the course. So a low, bumped shot is often the smart play, and on a windy spring day you'll be glad of it.

Visitors and booking

When the public can play

The course is open daily, but some times are kept for members. The club's normal public times are all day Monday and Thursday, Tuesday after 12:30pm, Wednesday and Saturday after 3:30pm, and Friday and Sunday after 10:30am. So for a full Saturday morning round, look elsewhere or ask the golf shop.

How to book

Register as a public member on the Torquay Golf Club website, then book a tee time online. Or call the golf shop on 03 5261 1677. The course and golf shop are open 7am to 6pm daily.

Competitions

The club runs a competition every day. Visitors can play in them if they hold an official golf handicap and pay the $5 competition fee. For the members' competitions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, call the golf shop first; places depend on the size of the field.

Dress code and etiquette

RACV's dress code is a collared shirt and closed shoes (no thongs), with no singlets, t-shirts, football jerseys, denim, baggy track pants or excessive branding. White socks are preferred. You're expected to carry a sand bucket and fill your divots. The club asks for ready golf and says an 18-hole round should take no more than 4 hours and 12 minutes.

Green fees and hire

These are the standard (non-RACV member) prices on RACV's golf page when we checked in October 2026. Check before you book, as they change.

Monday to Thursday

$100 for 18 holes and $80 for nine. From May to August there's an 18-hole special for $80 on Mondays and Thursdays after 1pm, not on public holidays or long weekends.

Friday to Sunday and peak periods

$110 for 18 holes and $85 for nine. Peak periods are all public holidays, extended long weekends and the summer holidays, which RACV defines as 26 December to 25 April. Juniors under 18 pay $35 for 18 holes and $25 for nine, and RACV members get lower rates.

Carts and clubs

On the club's price list (dated to 30 June 2026, so check the current rates), a cart is $65 for 18 holes and $45 for nine ($70 and $50 in peak periods). Clubs with a pull buggy are $35 and $25, a pull buggy on its own is $5, junior clubs are $15 and $10, and clubs for under-10s are free.

Practice

There's a short-course practice area for members, resort guests and green fee players. Check in at the golf shop first. It's an irons-only practice tee with markers at 50, 100 and 150 metres; drivers aren't allowed.

The resort side

The course sits inside RACV Torquay Resort, which has three places to eat and drink: Number One, White's Paddock and Harding's Lounge (the one for afternoon tea). There's also a pool, gym, One Spa, tennis courts and a playground and games room for kids. If the non-golfers in your group want a spa morning while you play, it's all in one place.

Getting there from Holyday House

Allow about ten minutes from the house in north Torquay, through town and onto the Great Ocean Road. There's off-street parking at the house for several cars, and if you want somewhere to keep the clubs between rounds, ask us.

It's right on the edge of Jan Juc, so a round here pairs well with an afternoon at Jan Juc beach or a drive out to Bells, about ten minutes from the house. Our Jan Juc guide covers the beach and the town. For a second round in town, The Sands is about five minutes from the house, and Anglesea Golf Club and its kangaroos are further down the coast.
